Fitzgerald’s piece titled “The Great Gatsby” reminds the reader about American dream. People come to America for wealth, respect, and to complete their dream just like Gatsby. He escaped to fulfil his American dream by escaping from his home, trying to fit in with wealthy people, and getting his love back.
To begin with, James Gatz who belonged from poor family whose parents were unsuccessful farmers. At the young he abandoned his family to achieve his American dream. “He had changed it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career where he saw Dan Cody’s yacht drop anchor over the most insidious flat on Lake Superior.”(Fitzgerald pg.98). When Mr.Sloane came for a visit, he wanted to go ride a horse but, Gatsby didn't have one. So Gatsby went to his garage to get his car. While Gatsby was in the garage tom said “My God, I don’t believe the man’s coming, Doesn’t he know she doesn’t want him?” (Fitzgerald pg.103). This quote means that Tom is trying to say that Mr.Sloane doesn’t want Gatsby to come with them because he doesn't have a horse and he doesn't fit with the East Egg side wealthy side people. When nick was going to his house he noticed gatsby reaching for something. “He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling.” (Fitzgerald pg.20). “I glanced seaward and and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.” Nick is trying to say that he had saw Gatsby trying to reach the green light, he is reaching for something that he couldn't get, but at the end of the green light there was a dock. Gatsby in this quote is trying to reach Daisy’s house where its at the end of the dock. The green light was Gatsby’s American dream, he just wanted to reach the green light, so he could get Daisy.
