Gary Huddleston: Poem Analysis

Decent Essays
A boy held up the folded flag, Cursed it, and called it a dirty rag.
An old man pushed through the angry crowd,
With a rusty shotgun shouldered proud.
His uniform jacket was old and tight,
He had polished each button shiny and bright.

"Freedom of Speech" the old man said, "Is worth dying for, good men are dead,So you can stand on this courthouse lawn,
And talk us down from dusk to dawn. But before any flag gets burned today,
THIS OLD MAN IS GOING TO HAVE HIS SAY!!"

…”Tommy and I wasn't even full grown,
Before we fought in a war of our own.
And Tommy died on Iwo Jima's beach Where five good men raised this flag so high,That the WHOLE WORLD COULD SEE IT FLY!”... -Battle of the Flag Written by Gary Huddleston

In the beginning of the poem, Bradstreet is sleeping during a calm and quiet night, and then suddenly, she wakes up by “thund’ring noise / And piteous shrieks of dreadful voice” (lines 3-4). She then sees that her house is burning in fire. Terrified, she cries out to God and prays so that God would help her. Her house eventually got entirely burned up, and Bradstreet ended up homeless, but she did not lose hope. In addition, the author says that “the rebel flag served only as a battle standard in the Civil War,” and an image which is to respect the sacrifice of the southern guys of the military (Horwitz, 2000). In fact, Horwitz gives proof that recommends and backs up the fact that the closeness of the revolutionary banner did not generally mean scorn. However, some events happened in 1940, when the meaning of the flag changed drastically, “Not until the 1940s did it frequently serve as a baldly racist banner, brandished by segregationist Dixiecrats and by the Klan and other groups during the Civil Rights era. It was also at this time that the flag appeared atop Southern statehouses,” explains Horwitz (Horwitz, 2000). The author says that some people nationwide, who love the Confederacy have had a deeper problem which remains actually in The United States because they do not know what happened in the Civil War, (Horwitz, 2000).…

Battle Flag As I was scanning the topic list for another topic to write curiosity paper #3 on one article popper out at me called “Tom Petty on past Confederate flag use”. It is a relatively short article written by Andy Greene and published by Rolling Stones about why Tom Petty agrees with South Carolina’s decision to take the confederate flag down from their government buildings. Even though the timing of the lowering of the flag could have been a bit better, the country was torn between white on black violence, I still agree with the decision South Carolina legislature made.…

One day, Mike found a dirty handkerchief in the gutter which gave him the idea to make an American flag. The POWs knew that any item beyond what they had been given as prisoners would result in a torture session, but that didn’t stop Mike. The rest of the POWs donated what little soap they had in order to contribute to Mike’s end goal. Mike scavenged to compile a small amount of items which allowed him to finish his makeshift American Flag. Upon, completion Mike awoke every POW to wave his flag in a nationalistic manner, inspiring the men to continue their hardships and work through the painful life as a prisoner of war.…

The implied meaning of the confederate flag, which is the slavery, develops unequal status in human society that is a conflict concept toward today's belief. As it is in “ Last Words: Two Confederate flags “ , the author mentions that she feels offensive whenever she sees the confederate flag even though she can understand the represented honor in the second unmodified displayed confederate flag ( Dufresne). After the civil war, the concept of equality is deeply planted in our moral consciousness today. Whenever we see the confederate flags we consider the slavery. When we consider the slavery, we consider its unequal in human relationships.…

He uses examples such as the Dukes of Hazzard, Gone with the Wind, Civil War reenactments, and war veteran ceremonies. He discusses the fact that the confederate flag honors descendants of civil war veterans, and is not an act of hatred towards African Americans (Jones). In his article “Don’t Tear Down the Confederate Battle Flag,” David French also agrees that the flag is no act of hatred and talks about his personal experience with the flag. He explains how he grew up with a military family who fought in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. French and mentions his direct involvement in the military, therefore giving himself more credibility.…

In class we read three books of poems that couldn 't be more different. They each have different styles of poetry and I got different imagery from each one. The first one by Donald Hall I thought was the easiest to read. It was like a book of short stories about his wife who eventually dies. Reading the poems in the book you can feel his emotions through his words and the imagery was like I was there suffering with him.…

When it comes to the question of how to think like a poet, one could answer this in many ways. My initial reaction is to say that there is no way to think “like a poet” because poets do not think alike. To be a poet, one must have something to say that is worth saying. Therefore, if all poets thought alike, then their poetry would not be that good…right? However, poetry is not completely avant-garde and formless.…

Bruce Meyer describes that a poem “whether happy or sad, is driven by a profound sense of love”. Meyer commonly writes poetry following the themes of lost love, heartbreak, suffering from pain and nature. Through his various works of poetry Meyer describes the pain and suffering of love and connects it with nature. Meyer himself describes his personal affinity for nature, as he lives across from a botanical garden, as well as his description of “people watching” for inspiration. His natural affinity for nature sets many poems in nature, relating back to humans and love.…
