Some inventions save people's live. Others make things faster or easier to do. Some inventions like light bulbs, cars and butter sticks will forever change human history. Can a rock change your life? Can a rock make $56,166,419.02 Well in the 1970’s it did! A man name Gary Dahl invented a “pet rock”. It was a rock sold to be a pet and he made millions.

Gary Dahl currently lives in the hills over Los Gatos, California. He thought up this invention when he was having drinks with his buddies one night in April 1975 when the conversation turned to pets. Mr. Dahl told his friends that dogs, cats, birds, and fish all a pain in the neck. They always made a mess, they misbehaved, and they cost too much money. The packing he made contained a Pet Training Manual and it came in a cardboard box that looked like an pet carrier. The packaging came with instructions “how to take care of your pet”. It came with “Commands” for it to “roll over,sit stay and it’s favorite play dead”. The pet rock sold for $3.95, The packaging manual cost him under 30 cents per rock.Therefore assuming the delivery cost another 65 cents per rock.Then Dahl was profiting 3 dollars per rock. He made a total of just over 15 million dollars in a six months in 1975. Today it is estimated to be $56,166,419.02 today. It originally looked like a normal grey rock with google eyes attached to it and you could add what you want to it. Like I said Gary Dahl sold the pet rock towards christmas time in 6 month period. You can still buy one. There are memorial pages, knock-offs, and one can still purchase such a pet, though new manufacturers have given their rocks new features and looks. For instance, not many plain gray pebbles are sold any more but there decorated and painted before you buy
