Introduction
Review the development of music, music changes along with the development of society which can be called the evolution of music. The place where people come together for any reason has music there: ceremony, funeral, wedding and etc, even though in the early period of music, music just started by some simple and coarse instruments, for example: bone flutes and tree stumps. With the development of times, music as a part of people’s life which is given more and more roles in the society. In melody, different melodic intervals and pattern symbolize distinctive emotion. Composers use these intervals and pattern in their compositions to express the nuance of emotion precisely. The work of Cooke indicates that ascending major third (do-mi) suggest happiness and triumph. The intervallic distance between “do” and “re” is called a whole step or a tone. (Daniel J. Levitin 2006, p.30) Major third has 2 tones. A song has major third interval is a famous song “Doe a Deer”, “doe” to “deer” and “-male” to “deer” both have a distance with 2 tones (major third), the style of the song is lively which seem filled with joyfulness. Other intervals like an ascending major sixth (do-la), it suggests a longing for pleasure, just as the song named “My Bonnie”.
