Frida Kahlo was born as Magdalena Carmen Frieda Calderon in Coyoacán, Mexico on July 6th, 1907. In her later years though, Kahlo pronounced that her new birthdate was July 7th, 1910 to coincide with the beginning of the Mexican Revolution, as well as to make herself seem younger (“Frida Kahlo: Complete Biography”). She was one of four daughters born to Wilhelm Kahlo, also known as Guillermo Kahlo, a German-Jewish man of Hungarian decent and Matilde Calderon, a woman of mixed Spanish and Indian heritage (Barnet-Sanchez). This mix of heritage played a substantial role in her continual self-growth as an individual as well as a subject of her own art. The essay I chose to analyze for this assignment was, “Remembrance of an Open Wound: Frida Kahlo and Post-Revolutionary Mexican Identity”, by Corrine Andersen. The author argued for a more powerful meaning behind Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits, claiming that Kahlo’s works of art were not desperate, attention seeking pieces, but rather, a view of cultural and political strains of present-day Mexico. Andersen wrote this article for the critics who overlooked Frida Kahlo’s activism and public involvement. Andersen was successful in proving Frida Kahlo’s self portraits had a more powerful message. Throughout the essay, the author, used several works of art to explain the message of political and cultural issues shown in Frida Kahlo’s pieces.…

Frida’s biography Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón, also known as Frida Kahlo, was a Mexican artist who held the art as a kind of psychological surgery to overcome the pain and sorrow in her life as kind of a humoristic relief. Her art, especially her self-portraits, have been very well known internationally, making her a feminist icon (although with today’s definition, she would not be considered a feminist) Frida was born on July 6 of 1907, in Coyocoán, on the outskirts of Mexico City. She was raised in the family’s home, which was later referred as the “Blue House” or “Casa Azul”, with a well-off economic status.…

At the age of 18 Kahlo was involved in a horrendous streetcar accident where not only was her lower body impaled on a metal rod, she broke her pelvis and also her spine in three places. As a result, she spent most of her life hospitalized in bed and suffered three miscarriages because of her prior injuries (Keller Cárdenas & Erickson). While Frida is mestiça, a woman who is of mixed heritage typically of white, Asian, and or indigenous ancestry, her dual heritage is not that simple as she embodies both modernity and tradition. Therefore, unlike other artists she refused to ‘patriotise’ Mexico by simplifying its image, constructing its unity, or authorising its masculine…

This inscription is the namesake of the painting. Once again, the theme of pain is present in Frida’s work. This time, however the pain is from the after effects of the accident that she suffered as a young adult. In this piece, the traditionally dressed Frida is representing hope for the injured Frida (Kahlo, Tate, p. 52). Frida’s clothing in this piece is that of traditional Tehuana, which identifies her with her Mexican heritage and political views.…
