To blame, or not to blame? Were the irresponsible acts of the two young lovers at fault, or was their fate the act of deceit fed to them by none other than Friar Lawrence? The Friar behaves irresponsibly, in which, causes destruction among the opposing families, and creates havoc between many characters. Furthermore, he is to blame for causing the events that lead to the overall tragedy, including the secret marriage, Juliet’s death-like sleep, and the suicides of both Romeo and Juliet. His advice and betrayal provoked further hatred to arise within the Montagues and Capulets feud. Primarily, the Friar assists with the personal needs of others, therefore, when Romeo approached him with news of his new-found love, he listened intently. The Friar irresponsibly kept Romeo’s secret from everyone, agreeing to marry the young pair. Come, come with me, and we will make short work, for, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone till Holy Church incorporate two into one (shakespeare pg. 420). The Friar was aware his reckless act of privately marrying the children of long-lasting enemies could be punishable by death, hence, he now needed to cover his mistaken tracks.
