Freshman Class Council

“Do I have to speak in front of everyone?” he asked. The buzz from my phone forced open my heavy eyelids. My body struggled for warmth as the frigid winter air cooled my bed. The message was from my friend of many years. He was anxiously preparing for our Class Council meeting which would be in two hours. “You can do this,” I managed to type back, despite blurry vision and extreme exhaustion. “I believe in you and what you have done. Be confident. They are going to love you.” A few weeks prior I asked my friend, who was notoriously shy when it came to speaking in front of groups, to be the chairperson of Class Council’s community service committee. I knew this role would be a stretch for him but I also believed he was ready for it. “You have done great work,” was the last thing I managed to type before I dozed off once more. …show more content…
I was new to the Freshman Class Council. I believed in our mission but I didn’t know how to contribute. I did not yet have the confidence to lead others; I had not yet found my voice. Inspired by the strong leaders in the classes ahead of me, I started to join various committees as a contributing member such as …………………… I learned how the power of a well-run group is exponentially stronger than individuals. I learned when to speak up and when to listen. By sophomore year I was assigned to chair a committee to produce our school-wide dodgeball tournament and that’s when my confidence grew. I became thirsty for more responsibility and by that spring I decided to run for

The oldest pair of socks I still own is my Bob the Builder socks. I got for Christmas when I was only four years old. I am more than glad that I still have them because it built up my admiration for socks. Those Bob the Builder socks are my lucky pair of socks. I have probably worn them every year in preparation for a piano recital, school play, benefit show, baseball game, math test, or whatever is thrown my way.…

Sometimes I wonder why, out of every city, town, and suburb in the entire country of the United States, my grandmother chose to move to Lynn, Massachusetts. A city otherwise rich in history, but unluckily dubbed over by an ingloriously annoying jingle, “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you’ll never come out the way you came in.” I heard it chanted through elementary school hallways, mocked by middle school kids, and hummed by high schoolers. You would think its omnipresence would keep away travelers, but, then again, my grandmother didn’t speak English. She came over from the Dominican Republic thirty-six years ago, with my mother and her five other kids.…

Partaking in the student council organization has allowed for personal and leadership growth, and is comprised of plentiful downfalls and successes. But I believe that it requires missteps and prosperity to learn and grow as a leader. In terms of strength, my skills in proper and adequate delegation tasks have contributed to the successes of my class. However, delegating and simply telling others what to do is not leadership, it is the act of collaborating with one another to execute an event or achieve the goal. Ultimately, I believe that it is my ability to uplift and empower others as my greatest asset.…

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

I had the confidence to finally get out of my comfort zone and started doing what regular kids do, which seemed impossible the year before. Having experienced this, I learned that my passion was in making a difference in other people's’ lives. I know I am driven to spend the rest of my life doing it.…

I’m grateful to have found a club called Junior Teen Institute-- an organization that promotes healthy lifestyles and peer leadership, back at my former school. The mentor often lectured us and her words profoundly motivated me, inspiring ideas that I decided to put into action. For the next week, I arduously wrote inspirational and encouraging words on sticky notes and contacted friends for help executing the plan. Soon, with permission, we were running around the school in the early morning, putting notes on lockers and using leftovers to decorate classrooms.…

The Freshman Convocation was a very unique experience in my opinion. I would say that the experience was phenomenal as a whole because it gave me a feeling of motivation and pride, something that I honestly lacked up until I attended the Freshman Convocation. As we, the freshman, were officially and formally welcomed by the administration, the President, and other members of the CSUN community, I imagined that this would be what it would probably look like when we all graduate. In other words, this experience was like getting an advanced view of our future graduation. Additionally, the administration and members of the CSUN community chose a specific book for first time freshmen students to read.…
