Bonjour Monsieur, et mes amis. Aujourd’hui, je veux vous présenter: La France. Can you guess what language i was speaking? That’s right! French. Today, I will mentioning the three aspects that France is most acclaimed for: Food, Language, and Fashion. But let me begin with some basic history.
Do you hear the people sing? Singing the songs of angry men? It is the music of the people who will never be slaves again! Does this sound familiar? Yes, it is from the movie that is a global sensation: Les Miserables. The movie, is a depiction of the French Revolution, and that is where we shall begin our understanding of France.
The revolution of France, was a time of political and social upheaval. The revolution overthrew the monarchy, and established a republic, setting an example for countries all over the world, triggering a decline of absolute monarchies. The revolution, is commonly regarded by academics, as one of the most crucial events in human history. Fun Fact: the term “liberal” was coined in Spanish politics to address the people who supported the French Revolution. The modern day French Republic is a highly developed country. It has the 6th strongest military in the world, with a defence budget of $48 billion, and more than 200,000 active military personnel (Writter, n.d.). It is categorized into metropolitan France, and overseas regions, such as Guadeloupe, and French Polynesia. France is one of the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council, the other four being the United States of America, Russia, China and the United Kingdom, all of which, possess nuclear capabilities, making them world superpowers. LANGUAGE Now, most of you may not have studied the French language before, but what if I told you that vocabulary-wise, you are pretty proficient in French? Like, 15,000 French words kind of proficient. These words are called True Cognates (Lawless, n.d.), and they are spelt the exact same in both languages. Take this phrases for example: Je fume une cigarette, j’attends le bus, je vais au cinéma, je porte un bikini. You can probably guess these words: cigarette, bus, cinema and bikini. Why you ask? Let me provide some background information: England and France are friendly neighbours today, but the relationship wasn’t always so pleasant. If you are a gastronomic enthusiast, France is the go to place. The quantity of food in French Cuisine may not sit well with many of the guys, but the quality is definitely excellent. A typical French meal consists of: an entrée, such as salad, soup, or the world renowned foie gras. The main course: usually a course of delicious meat or fish, and some vegetables. And to end off, the dessert that can be ice cream, or cheese. Frequently, wine will accompany food in French fine dining. In France, eating is a subtle form of art. Various rules and manners are to be followed, such as sitting up straight while eating, and not crossing arms at the table. (Delp, n.d.) Their high regard for dining, may be the reason why it is common for two-hour lunch breaks!
Jokes aside, I hope my speech has helped you gain some knowledge about France, and if you are interested in immersing yourself in French culture, do visit France. After all, France is the most visited country on earth, with 87.3 million
