“Fremont High School” by Jonathan Kozol is a report that centers on the high school’s many problems. Problems that vary anywhere between bathroom sanitation to how the school itself is actually ran. Kozol talked to student and faculty alike to try and figure out some answers as well as doing some research on his own during the report. By the end of his visit at Fremont High School he was worried for the students who were not getting a proper education, the sanitation, and the faculty. After that, he wrote this essay to bring awareness of the trouble at the school to the populous probably in hopes that they could help in some way. Many things are evident throughout the report that trouble Kozol. The sanitation was one of the first things the students explained to him while he sat in class with them. In one instance at the end of his report a student asks him a question about why schools that do not need so much educational things get so much of it while they do not get what they need. Kozol answered her saying he had been looking for forty years for an answer to that question, but still has not found one. He showed concern nearly every time he heard about a new problem within the school from the students, who had a lot to say when Kozol entered the first classroom. He wrote, “The students knew I was a writer (they were told this by their teacher) and they took no time in getting down to matters that were on their minds.”(642). Also, throughout the report Kozol seems to be trying to gather as much information as he possibly can during his visit to Fremont High School.
