What happens when one of those assignments expresses a religious preference? Can a teacher really do anything about it? Can a school really infringe on the rights of a student’s free speech and punish them for it? The rights of students are protected and the rights of the school are protected as well. There are instances where a student’s freedom of speech can be censored in the event the school deems the student’s speech or action is a disruption to school activities, vulgar, profane or offensive (Baker, 2013). The basis for this action is based on a Supreme Court case; Abrams v. U.S. (1919), where the court ruled that speech acts could only be punished if the speech presented a clear and present danger of imminent harm (Baker
