Al-Solaylee introduces descriptive texts about his family in Yemen, painting the picture of art and literature-loving middle-class civilians, much like middle-class western culture. Once this connection is established, he follows by describing their “lost war to extremism” creating an emotional reaction from the reader. Al-Solaylee makes it appear as if people praying and wearing burkas is something that we should pity, since it implies that they’ve fallen victim to brainwash. The chronological composition creates a story like feel, giving the readers of the average reading level a stronger understanding. Al-Solaylee simply combines of the overtake of extremism, war and the Muslim religion which grabs the intended audience’s attention due to the current hype about extremist Muslims and the war on…
Since Salman Rushdie was condemned to death by the Ayatollah for his book, “The Satanic Verses.” I have been intrigued on how anyone could write something and have such a large group of people want you dead. The last 10 years has shown us how radical Islam is showing how cruel and brutal they can be with no compromise. In 1993, the judges for the “Booker of Bookers panel explicitly singled out Midnight’s Children for novelty of content and the three judges agreed that Rushdie's...stood above the rest….” W. L. Webb, one of the judges, summed up the thinking of the panel when he concluded that Midnight's Children "changed the way we understand a violently changing world” (Su).…
The article, "There's no hate speech exception to the First Amendment", was written in 2017 by Joan Vennochi, an American newspaper columnist for the Boston Globe. The newspaper article was published in the Boston Globe, a leading American daily newspaper. In this article, Vennochi defends the idea that the First Amendment protects even the speech we hate to hear. The author establishes her authority to speak on this subject by previously working as a City Hall bureau chief, and also as a State House bureau chief. The intended audience of this article is primarily the middle-aged generations who are specifically more involved in politics due to the fact that the Boston Globe caters to this group of people, Law professors, and Law students.…
In the article, “Obnoxious Freedom” by David Horsey, the author provides his input on the recent attacks by Islamic terrorists on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. David Horsey is an american writer and is writing for readers throughout the United States. The article expresses his opinions on freedoms of speech and influenced by the values found in the U.S. If the writer was in a more Islamic country or a country with less freedoms, he would have been more careful with his word choice and possible even changed the message of the article. David Horsey wrote about this event because he is also a writer and wanted to convey his own views on the issue.…
This paper will endeavor to apply John Stuart Mill’s model of free speech to a situation brought to the forefront in an episode of TVO’s The Agenda, titled What is Wrong with Mark Steyn? The episode explores the issue of Maclean’s magazine refusing to publish a response to a series of articles by Steyn that were being viewed as hateful, as well as potentially harmful, to Muslim people in Canada. It will be argued that Mill would advocate for Maclean’s to publish a response to Steyn’s hateful speech because, if not challenged and clarified by opposing opinion, such speech could lead to direct harm of Canada’s Muslim population. However, while this paper will generally agree with Mill’s likely position in regards to the free speech issues raised…
Beginning in British Columbia in 2008, two Muslim doctors each filed a complaint with the Tribunal, against the well-known Roger’s Publishing . The article published through Roger’s describes all Muslims as having serious ambitions for world religious domination, and that they will use violence to achieve this supposed goal. The Tribunal’s decision was to dismiss this complaint and I agree with their decision. Although I strongly believe there exists situations where freedom of expression must be limited, this is not of these situations. In this case, the article was merely expressing an opinion in a way that was not hateful or filled with contempt.…
In 1867, the book The Underground Railroad was published by William Still. Unlike many of African Americans, William was born free and spent most of his life fighting for the freedom of others. In adulthood, William became an abolitionist movement leader in order to fight against race relations and prevent the capturing of free slaves. After teaching himself how to read and write. William quickly learned that education would be the key to the resistance of slavery and began documenting the journeys of escaped slaves.…

More than once a day in the Unites States there is a shooting that wounds or kills at least four people (LaFraniere, Cohen, Oppel, 2015, para. 1). In response to the Orlando shooting that killed 49 people and wounded another 53 actor and writer Aziz Ansari wrote and published an article to the New York Times on June 24, 2016 titled “Why Trump Makes Me Scared for My Family.” In this article Ansari writes about the Orlando shooting the response of presidential candidate Donald Trump. Ansari also reacts to Trump’s comments towards Muslim Americans and supports his own views with statistics and facts. Freedom of Speech It was in 1791 that the United States transcribed the ten amendments within the Constitution. The first amendment, Freedom of Speech, is one of the most controversial laws in today’s society. It states that Congress shall make no law that reduces ones freedom of speech or freedom of press. Although there is a law in place stating such freedoms, it is not as clear and simplistic as it states.…
The Editorial Board of the New York Times’ article, “The Republican Attack on Muslims,” was written to call out Republicans on their false accusations and statements on the Muslim religion and people as a whole. The purpose of this article is to point out and stop Anti-Muslims throughout the Republican party and the people that follow them, who give American Muslims a bad reputation, in which ruins their chances of ever potentially becoming President. Muslims are people that follow the religion of Islam; they are also refugees who are brought over to adapt to our way of living, but their religion is to remain respected. Republicans, recently, Ben Carson, are bashing Muslims and their religious beliefs. In the article, “The Republican Attack on Muslims,” by the Editorial Board, they mention that Ben Carson declared on “Meet the Press” that Muslims are unfit to run for president because a president’s faith should be “consistent with the Constitution (The Editorial Board 1).”…
Rhetorical Analysis of Bjorn Staerk’s “Living with Terrorism” “Living with Terrorism,” is a blog post written by Norwegian blogger Bjorn Staerk on bearstrong.net in 2006. In this essay, Steark provides his perspective on how to manage and cope with the sensitive topic of worldwide terrorism. Intended for the conservative public, this essay is also written as a rebuttal to the far-right and anti-Islamic Norwegian blogger Peder Are Nøstvold Jensen (aka Fjordman). Fjordman suggested in one of his blogs that Islam, not Islamism--the reform movement that advocates the reordering of government and society in accordance with laws prescribed by Islamic beliefs-- was the culprit behind terrorism, and this greatly displeased Staerk’s Universalist creed…
In Manal Younis’ ‘Call Him a Terrorist’ and Waleed Aly’s ‘ISIL is Weak’, they focus on the same theme, terrorism. Although they share the same foundation, their opinions and techniques in presenting their ideas are completely contrasting. Younis’ poem is opinion based and incredibly emotional whereas Aly’s speech is full of facts with credible sources. Despite the fact that their texts are displayed in different ways, a lot of the stylistic devices used are similar. These devices are used to persuade the reader/viewer to consider the point of view the author is portraying and to leave them to remember what they have heard or read.…
In order to resolve the contradiction between Jihad and McWorld, people must come together and communicate. Much of people’s prejudices come from what they here in the media. We…
Censorship is defined as the suppression of speech or information on the basis that the material is considered to be harmful or considered objectionable(1). The objectionable material may be immoral or blasphemous if disseminated to the public, but it is subjective to one’s personal beliefs. The use of censorship is a prominent issue in today’s society as it is affected by companies self-censoring and governments abusing their control over it. Media censorship in today's day and age is largely based on preventing opposing political opinions from gaining traction and spreading different ideologies. Platforms such as CNN, Huffington Post, Twitter, Facebook, and Buzzfeed have all supported censorship at one point in time, whether it be indirectly…
