Free Fall Lab

Problem Statement:
In the following lab report, the following questions will be answered that have to do with the average acceleration due to the gravity on an object in free fall : 1. List the experimental acceleration due to gravity that you measured at each distance 2. Which value do you believe is the most accurate? Why? 3. What factors do you believe contribute to experimental error in this measurement?
4. What could be done to improve the quality of the result? How could change the experiment?

Background Knowledge:
In reference to Sir Isaac Newton, we know that in free fall an object moves towards the surface of the Earth with a uniform accelerated motion due to gravity. With that being the case we also know that the further that an object falls, the faster the speed will be.

Experiment:
First I put a piece of tape on the wall and measured out and marked at 0ft, 2ft, 4ft, and 8ft on the tape. With the 0ft mark being farthest from the floor. I then had my helper stand with the golf ball at the 0ft mark and she released the ball as I timed when the ball passed the particular line I was measuring for. I repeated this for each line 5 times and recorded each time the ball passed each line.

Data Table:
The data table will represent if the change in distance will change the amount of acceleration
Independent Variable: Distance
Dependent Variable: Acceleration
The acceleration was calculated by the formula: 2(distance)ft/Average^2sec
Distance (feet)

The objective of this lab was to figure out how to determine the range from a given set of velocity and height from the ball. The height of the ball when it leaves the horizontal projectile is at 93.5cm or .935m. The velocity of the ball was .0674 seconds in the range of .1 meter. Creating a total velocity of 1.484m/s.…

The reason we tested it twice was because it was more accurate that way. For my paper airplane, the average distance was 26.5 ft, which was decent compared to others. My paper airplane had an average time of 1.43 seconds and an average speed of 18.87 ft/sec. In terms of distance, the smaller…

If the experiment were to use a different mass the result would not differ as the length that the mass travels is independent on both the mass of the objects and the gravitational force which is acting upon it. However the landing position of the mass is dependent on the heights (h1 and h2). 4) How would your results…

With these measurement techniques there is a risk for interrater error. To reduce the risk, these measurements will be taken twice by two different members of the research team. If the two measurements are not the same, but they are relatively similar, the average will be calculated and accepted as the measurement used for the research study. Should the two measurements not be similar, the primary investigator will conduct the third measurement, which will be used instead of the two previous…

time graph and calculating the slope of the graph. By definition, acceleration represents change in velocity over time. Therefore, in order to find the acceleration of the fallen object, we calculated the slope. Mathematically, the slope of velocity vs. time graph is the change in velocity by the change in time, which represents the acceleration. The actual acceleration of a fallen object is 9.80 m/s2.…
