Intro When asking Government officials if they gerrymander states every time there is a census, nearly every representative will say no. By doing this, they are granting themselves immunity from laws and creating higher odds that they will be re-elected. We constantly are put into a so called “group” which is based off of race and political beliefs. This corruption runs all the way to the housing market, where people are shown houses within a region that is predominantly one race, or a certain political belief. By “organizing” citizens this way, representatives of a particular belief are more likely to be reelected, therefore keeping more citizens happy. There are many different ways legislators and representatives are able to gain more…
The confusion surrounding the Electoral College stems from the ongoing arguments between those who wish to abolish, reform, or keep the system of voting. Yet, many people do not understand the system itself, this adds to the unresolved conflict. When the public wants more influence over presidential elections, would most Americans be equipped enough to make a well-informed decision? In 1787, the founding fathers did not believe so, that is why they created the Electoral College. Currently, citizens of the U.S. have the means to access lots of information on many different topics.…
The Constitution assigns to the States the primary responsibility for determining the manner of selecting the Presidential electors. See Art. II, § 1, cl. 2. When questions arise about the meaning of state laws, including election laws, it is our settled practice to accept the opinions of the highest courts of the States as providing the final answers.…
A strong national government was not an ideal outcome for most Americans in the early ninetieth century. In fact, a lot of people were scared that they would have a strong national government because they just fought for freedom from that type of government. Many guidelines were put into place to limit the power of the national government by the constitution, but that did not stop the national government from expanding its power very rapidly almost immediately after being formed. The national government was not always so powerful but with time it became much more powerful and a lot of that power came from the early nineteenth century.…
What would have happened if four presidents that have long since been entered into the history books had not been the ones elected? In 1876, 1888, 1960, and 2000, the popular vote and the Electoral College did not elect the same candidate. However, the Electoral College had the final decision.…
In conclusion that government need to stop invading our privacy. The government need to stop trying to get access to our private information that they don’t need. They could possibly let hackers get it and the lives of millions of people would be…
The Constitution reiterated the notion of a government that was not intrusive to the public. Coming from England, there was constant dictation upon the citizens. The Founding Fathers wanted to construct a powerful nation while remaining respectful of the liberties and freedoms of individuals. Having tradition prominent throughout America’s history, it would be hypocritical to go against the Founding Fathers beliefs on freedom and the free will of the people. Therefore, having the government monitor the internet would break the institution of Americans being able to communicate and learn freely.…
How the government function affects everyone because of the huge effect it can have on things like the economy, and how each person lives their lives. The current United States government is falling towards a liberal ideal and this is starting to hurt the country in many ways. The liberal ideal is that the government should try to micro manage the people and try to give equal opportunity to everyone. If the U.S. took a more conservative stance, by stepping out of public matters, it would result in a better country. The conservative ideal is that there should be personal responsibilities and the government should remove itself from the citizens lives and give the people the freedom to pursue happiness because of their own goals.…
When it came to drafting the Constitution, the Framers had different options and ideas of the ways to select a president and the Electoral College seemed to fit their society well. After all, politics in 1787 was different than what it has come to be in this time. During that time, there were only 13 colonies, which are states, all of which were located on the Atlantic border. This made “national campaigns... impractical...”, because transportation and communication wasn’t well built between colonies (Kimberling 1). The founders also believed that “State loyalties could trump the best interests of a national government” which would make it difficult to elect a candidate with a national influence and that it would be difficult to elect a candidate…
Often, the campaign process reveals the fault within America’s electoral system, which is now relevant in light of the 2016 presidential election. The political leaders in America, (specifically congressmen) often use tactics that marginalize minority groups and encourage undue voter representation in order to secure their political position and increase their party’s power. Political leaders using tactic such as these are difficult to remove from power, despite public opinion. The elections and campaigns in America do not provide a good system for choosing the best political leaders, nor should they be admired and emulated, because the political leaders are often able to manipulate the elections using tactics such as gerrymandering.…
The removal of information from the public, censorship. It is more of a punishment than a help. The government is undertaking the whole idea of censorship. Today, it is a phase of social control, and every day it is getting more common around the world. Censorship of the internet infringes on the First Amendment, is unfair, along with it being selfish and hypocritical to the people around.…
The Horn of Africa, Eritrea, is home to around 6 million people and is the worlds’ most oppressive state. Isaias Afwerki has been in power for around two decades and since taking up power in 1993 has forbidden any elections from taking place. Political theorist, Robert Dahl, considers the following four aspects vital for the making of a free and fair election: 1. the ability to vote without fear of reprisal; 2. coercion is prohibited and not practiced; 3.…
Voter Suppression is alleged to be a strategy to influence the outcome of an election by discouraging or preventing people from exercising the right to vote. In the past, intimidation has been a factor of voter suppression since the Jim Crow laws. The Republican National Committee came under fire in the early 1980s when it sponsored the creation of the group called National Ballot Security Task Force to patrol polling stations in every vote fraud. On 1920, the 19th amendment to the constitution was ratified, enfranchising all American women and declaring for the first time that they, like men, deserve all the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Intimidation, violence, and racial discrimination in state voting laws, an amount of three…
