You can only imagine how much terminology a future doctor had to learn in their 8 years of education so it’s with no surprise that he almost got caught in his lie from not knowing how to solve a medical emergency. The key though, was to get someone else to do the work for you as Frank later figured out. He stated, “I had other emergency-ward calls in ensuing nights, and each time I let the interns handle the situation. I would go in, question one of them as to the nature of the illness or injury and then ask him how he would treat the patient. On being told, I’d confer with one or both of the other interns who were usually present. If he or they concurred, I’d nod authoritatively and say, All right, Doctor. Have at it ”(Abagnale 91). Although it didn’t seem like the interns were being manipulated, they in fact were. Frank could’ve had a very sticky situation on his hands if he had to go through with operating on someone. He used the interns’ dissatisfaction about never getting the opportunity to practice real life medicine, and turned it around by letting them have full control of the operations and not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, the interns took the chance.
It can be seen that Frank Abagnale employs a sizable range of different methods to manipulate people around him. It’s a trial and error situation so knowing how to handle that is important. Part of the problem is that the majority of people in the world are honest and don’t think deceptively, and that’s precisely what criminals exploit, and why people like Frank Abagnale are so successful..
