I thought up my new subject I decided to do my paper on Abraham Lincoln’s presidency because I thought that I would find a lot more with that topic so I switched up and I went down to the library to find a book that I could borrow to help me with my research and sure enough as soon as I started looking I found a really big book but I knew that I would be able to read it in time but I took a look at it anyways and they had a bunch of picture that had captions with good facts. The two armies started fighting near Manassas Junction, Virginia, this was the first major land battle. The Union brought about 35,000 soldiers to the battle and the confederacy brought about 20,000 soldiers all to a river known as Bull Run. Fighting defensively most of the day the rebel soldiers were finally able to flank the union to the right which allowed the confederates to push the union back and take the victory which surprised the north because they thought it would be a very easy win but the south got more confidence and they thought that they had a fighting chance.
On February 6, 1862 the battle of Fort Henry took place in efforts of gaining back control of the supply lines and rivers. General Lee marched his army into Pennsylvania in late June 1863. On July 1st confederates attacked the union army commanded by general Meade at the town of Gettysburg and as the days went on the fighting got heavier and heavier and the confederates attacked the union from the left and right side. July 3rd Lee commanded less than 15,000 troops to charge the center of the enemy at Cemetery Ridge. This move was known as Pickett’s Charge it did go through the union line but the failed after a little while and cost thousands of lives on the confederate’s side. General Lee was forced to draw back his hurt army toward Virginia on the fourth of July. In November 1863 Abraham Lincoln was asked to speak at the National Cemetery of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania this was one of the bloodiest battles in the civil war.
