In a society where culture and value are constantly evolving, we as a species sometimes need to take a step back and analyze all the things that surround us to see where our societal values lie. Usually, we do not see or understand these hidden values until they are shoved in our face or we have to deal with them directly. However, we can all begin to understand and analyze these contemporary cultural values by implementing some form of cynicism in regard to exposing and showing all the different avenues of a situation even if sometimes it is contrary to popular belief. I don't mean cynicism in the form of just being blatantly negative to certain statements or ideas. I mean cynicism in the form of questioning the validity of someones statement or just simply being curious of the motives of that …show more content…
Some of the greatest minds that have ever lived are cynics and have revolutionized our world simply because they questioned what everyone else wouldn’t. We must remember that sometimes the key to understanding our society and the values that it holds are hidden discreetly in subtle clues and actions and it is up to us to use our cynical minds to discover them and to maybe one day expose them to the world.

With all this talk about cynicism what exactly is it? Cynicism is simply being skeptical of other people ideas in terms of there validity. This cynicism isn't negative in nature however, often times many people take this skepticism as being negative or being attacked. A true cynic strives for truth and fairness from all acquaintances, institutions and public figures alike. In a world that is at times corrupt, this thought process can only be a good thing. Cynicism helps create an honest world. Looking through hypocrisy and shame, and upholding the belief that virtue is the greatest

The moral of the story is, even if you find yourself holding a certain mind bug or bias you can still be considered a good person. In fact “we do not yet know how to go about either eliminating or outsmarting self-directed mind bugs. However, they may prove modifiable by exposure to role models” (Banaji and Greenwald 164). In fact, it would take generations to condition our brains to not hold these stereotypes about others and to stop the judgement. If there is one lesson to be learned from this book it is that yes, we will hold biases about others that may or may not be true.…

People are shaped by the world. In today’s society, people are shaped through social media, surrounding environments, various religious views, and people’s personal worldviews and convictions. As previously said by Mark Twain, "Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody." This statement illustrates how, no matter who, everyone can be influenced by negative aspects such as vanity, selfishness, arrogance and desire for power. In the book The House Of The Scorpion, the characters are constantly altered by these negative traits, which often results in terrible consequences. Farmer's novel narrates the story of a boy who wishes to be included in society and later discovers he is the clone of an important figure, El Patron.…

A brick wall of freezing air hits your face as you walk down a seemingly clean and populated part of town. Your pace shifts as the weather on this particular day seems like the coldest in ages and yet you start to warm up as you near the epicenter of a part of town that seems to glow with its radiant warmth. The sidewalks are clean and well maintained; the shops are vibrant and lively with people enjoying the day. As you enter the Metropolis you are only greeted with a harsh and cold flurry of wind on your uncovered face and the ever more obvious colder stares coming from the frigid and dumbfounded people behind them. The stares seem to be the worst thing to bear as the cold stares are freezing your body so you shuffle your all black shoes…

In J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, the tone is cynicism. This tone is portrayed by the main character and speaker, Holden Caulfield. Holden is undeniably quick to judge and never fails to point out flaws in his peers. His cynicism targets an imperfection of each character, and this most likely stems from his lack of trust of other characters barring his younger sister, Phoebe.…

“If the talent of ridicule were employed to laugh men out of vice and folly, it might be of some use to the world; but instead of this, we find that it is generally made use of to laugh men out of virtue and good sense, by attacking everything that is solemn and serious, decent and praise worthy in human life.” – Joseph Addison People today simply don’t understand. Those that do simply do not care. Those that both care and understand are not understood or cared for, which is one of the problems Joseph Addison brings across.…

Stereotype, a word that conjures up a myriad of feelings and images in ones brain. It allows people to place others into boxes, categorizing them for future reference. However, the danger here is that stereotypes do not make room for the expansion upon said boxes. Michael Pickering, a professor of media and cultural analysis at Loughborough University in the UK, expands upon this idea of stereotypes and their inflexibility in his book Stereotyping: The Politics of Representation published in 2001 by Palgrave Macmillan.…

No one movie, article, or document really changes anything. The reaction of the people, this is what actually makes change. With the reaction of people to a good film, document or article, more good outlets of media will be released. Ever since I was a young child I thought about the future I would like to have and the world I would like to live in. I was taught from a very young age that hate and distrust towards someone due to them having different beliefs than yours was not acceptable and just led to the downfall of people and society. Currently, the United States is in a state of hate and distrust based solely on the different political belief systems that have formed over the past hundred years. It is my goal in life that one day our country will no longer be separated based solely on a political belief system and that we can come together on the country’s most pressing issues and come to a pragmatic solution that is best for the future of our great nation.…

Issues are rattling through our bones, forcing us to switch up what we believe and how we live. I personally believe that a huge issue that is changing this generation and one we will be dealing with more than other problems is learning how to shrink cynicism. There is so much information coming at us today it is hard to compute what is real, what is false, and more importantly, when to not be afraid, cynical, and apathetic. This generation needs to stop being stingy with love, and instead give it freely and without charge.…
