rather a heroic action. Linking this to our class text, Animal Farm, one such animal who followed blindly and was unable to see recognise the evil intentions of Napoleon was Boxer (Orwell, 1945). He showed how when followers do not step up to evil leaders, they suffer from toxic leadership. From the book, the Art of Followership, I understood how followers like Boxer in the bid to become good followers must “speak truth to power”. The root cause of this was hero-worship. Hero-worship between Napoleon and Boxer as well as Squealer, his right hand man and the other animals. This was the solid support that Napoleon used in running his dictatorship.

To begin with, the first sighting of the lack of education the animals posses is when Napoleon starts to control them. The animals were so absent minded to realize that Napoleon was building a pyramid, and placing everyone below him. For example, in the novel, it states “Napoleon denounced such ideas as contrary to the spirit of Animalism. The true happiness he said , lay in hard work and living frugally,” (Chapter 10, Pg 107). With this action taking place, it shows that Napoleon took advantage of the dictatorship and used it to his own well being instead of properly leading them.…

Motive lies behind every action we take, and can often cause an action that is seemingly good to become immoral. The motives behind our beliefs are no exception, and as a result Christians are subject to immoral Christian belief; an immorality that lies in the motive and not in the consequence. When one devotes oneself to Christianity under desires other than to seek the truth and find God, the faith loses its validity and becomes one of mercenary affairs instead of Godly affairs. These desires take many forms and are laced throughout C.S. Lewis’ writings Throughout The Screwtape Letters, Lewis most explicitly states the desire to bolster a cause and rally a group together as an illegitimate motive for adopting Christian ideas.…

His blind devotion towards Napoleon only increases the destruction of freedom and equality when Boxer, “caught a dog in mid-air, and pinned him to the ground […] looked [towards] Napoleon to know whether he should crush the dog to death or let it go” (83). Napoleon caused pain to the other animals by using violence such as the dogs which breaks freedom and equality; however, despite this, Boxer listens to Napoleon’s orders. The rise of a rebellion against Napoleon was not impossible, but with Boxer’s devotion to him, it seemed to be. Even after Boxer’s obvious death, the two maxims he constantly used “I will work harder,” and “Comrade Napoleon is always right” were manipulated into words of motivation for the animals (125). With Boxer’s usual motivation, all of the things changing did not seem strange to the other animals, yet those changed items slowly but surely broke the freedom and equality.…

“All animals are equal.” (Orwell) This statement is certainly applicable to human society, and is the basis for some peoples ideals, but in George Orwell’s Animal Farm it sums up the entire book completely in an ironic way. Communism, while innocent and appealing in thought, was proven in Russia during the 1900’s to be damaging and easily corruptible in practice. Pure communism is the sharing of wealth and abolishment of private property, where everyone works to provide for the state, and receives only enough to sustain life.…
