Socialism can be beneficial to many people who look for equality rather than the opportunity to better themselves.
Socialism can be beneficial in many ways but it also has its share of flaws.
An example of one of the flaws is lack of motivation to work harder.
Because everyone except the government gets the same pay as the man beside him why would one work harder just to pick up the slack of the lazy person next to him with no extra benefits.

In the idea of socialism the people are all equal and all the government does is distribute the goods produced and money payed.
The key problem with socialism is that there is no incentive to work harder and excel and because of that problem socialism does not work. Primarily due to the fact that if everyone get payed the same just because they have the same job title as others with the same title and they work hard to make a living and the guy next to him don't do anything what reason is there to work if the one that's lazy gets payed the exact same as the one that works hard.
In socialism everyone is supposed to be equal but not everyone is treated equal because do you think the government is going to treat themselves as bad as they treat those that work.
The government isn't going to let themselves be as poor as the peasants and if you think that is fair or equal you're a fool for believing that.
People are naturally competitive so when you take competition out of the equation the problems don't just work themselves
