Flame Test Lab

Superior Essays
Introduction
The purpose of this lab is for the experimenter, using their knowledge about density and observations found during flame tests, to recognize unknown plastics. The tester will also try to identify these plastics based on other characteristics exhibited by the plastics. Ideally the point of this lab is to identify plastics using density and the results of a flame test. The purpose can be achieved by evaluating the density of each plastic and observing their reaction to fire. Once these observations are made they can be compared to the qualities of the plastics already provided. You can find the mass each plastic by placing them on a balance and the volume of the piece can be found by water displacement in graduated cylinder.

Solution A is 100 mL rubbing alcohol + 40 mL distilled water, to get a density of 0.91 g/mL. There are 80 mL rubbing alcohol + 40 mL distilled water in Solution B, with a density of 0.93 g/mL. Solution C is made up of 150 mL distilled water, the density is 1.00 g/mL. The last solution, Solution D, is 75 grams sugar and 150 mL water, it has a density of 1.14 g/mL. The next step is to find the mass, volume, and density of each plastic using the methods described in the introduction and record it on the data table. Then the densities need to be determined by putting each plastic in the four solutions made in the first step. Each piece needs to be completely submerged, then record if the piece sinks or floats. Make sure to dry off each sample before continuing to the next step. The estimated density will be determined on whether it sunk or floated. I the plastic sunk it was denser than that solution, and if it floated it was less dense. The estimated density is a range of densities the plastic can be based on the results from the previous step. The next step is to perform the flame test. This can be accomplished by heating the copper wire, connected to a cork, in the Bunsen burner flame until it glows red. Push the hot wire into the piece of plastic and place that in the flame. Record the observations of the flame test on the data table. Finally, the mass and volume should be specifically recorded,

The densities of 3 different solutions, water, saltwater, and an unknown solution, were calculated using a triple beam balance and a graduated cylinder. Density was also used to discover how much zinc and copper are found in a penny. The following results were found: water’s density, 1.02 g mL-1; saltwater’s density, 1.05 g mL-1; and the unknown substance labeled two’s density, 1.04 g mL-1. The percent error was calculated for water’s density as 2%. The composition of a penny was calculated using volume by water displacement and the mass of the pennies.…

We measured the mass of the grains and polymers. The grain's mass was 2.1 grams after we subtracted the Dixie cup. The polymer's mass was over 210 grams because of the mixture. To construct the experiment we carefully cut open the diaper over a ziploc bag and carefully collected the grains into a corner of the bag avoiding breathing them in. We then cut the corner of the grains into an ice cream cone shaped and dumped them into a Dixie cup to be measured.…
