Animal welfare is making sure the well-being of an animal is met. There is much controversy worldwide regarding the rights and ethical treatment of animals and many disputes within the sport of thoroughbred racing. According to Dr. John Webster, Professor of Animal Husbandry at the University of Bristol, there are five freedoms that humans need to strive to provide for their animals: Freedom from thirst, hunger, and malnutrition, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury, and disease, freedom to express normal behavior, and freedom from fear and distress. By following these guidelines there is no reason an animal should not be able to live a happy and healthy life. Associating these five freedoms will help improve “the sport of kings” and create an ethical lifestyle for both horse and human. Thoroughbred Racing has been around for centuries. It was founded in England after the Crusades. Fleet Arab and Turkish stallions were brought back from the Middle East and Asia Minor and bred with stouter native mares.(myfantasystable.com) This new thoroughbred breed became known for its ability to carry weight at fast speeds and long distances. They are prepped for their 3 year old debut on the track starting as 2 year olds. Training for the track requires running at high speeds on their fragile, forming bones and joints. There is some evidence in recent studies that demonstrates horses running at younger ages have longer racing careers than horses started at older ages and to maximize bone and tendon strength horses should begin training at an early age. There are also the statistics that support indication of high rates of injuries in young horses. Trainers need to come up with a routine schedule for these horses to maximize strengthening without pushing horses over the edge and causing
