The lack of quality in Firm A led to Inefficiency, waste, and complacency. All the issues have been noted by the acquaintance for a few months and the management has not taken steps to remedy them. A lack of quality is at all ends, not just one. The Primary method of production is a problem in itself. Batch and Queue is used, and even when used effectively, it is still slow. When testing up to four or five dozen parts and each set comes in dozens or half-dozens as him being required to wait until all the slots in what they use to test. Often this method creates bottlenecks when on process takes longer than another. This is not surprising due to the lack of process awareness according to him. “Failures and defects like clockwork,” he remarked. He then added, “Although you want a process under control if something is this consistent and not addressed it is counter-productive.” He listed some issues he has seen often: • When using a machine for precision welding the tanks are replaced automatically when it gets low but when it reaches that point it starts to sputter leaving a product with a poor weld which can be an issue down the line with weak bonds. • Like above when the heat is not consistent, the brittle material can easily shatter during manufacturing. The Lens of certain parts has had this issue. • Holes that are …show more content…
Diving into what makes a smaller company successful over years with consistency and with a lean mentality shows a stark difference. First, the pieces are made by the order. The process is done using an assembly line type method with one piece per section. Instead of quality control Total quality management or TQM is assuring quality at every step. Each section is fully equipped so it is not moved around. Everything not made in house is from a supplier which is suited just for them to improve efficiency. Firm B is ISO 9000 certified which is a quality in standard and efficiency. The difference in between the process is important as the impact is deep. First, the product leads to many different things. When building to a batch the difference from one piece flow is how quality can be applied. The quality process in batch and queue is not looked at until the product is made and this causes pieces which have had defects to be worked on until the quality control step leaving wasted value on a product which is rendered unusable. However, TQM allows quality checks at every step as each product is made through an assembly line. Certain measures are taken by Firm B to prevent the issues as listed by the interviewee such as having a higher low fuel threshold for welding and the production prevents running out of a single item as there is more attention to detail and allows defects to be stopped before they
