After three long weekends atop the box office, Finding Dory has officially fallen – to its newly released animated rival, The Secret Life of Pets.

As expected, The Secret Life of Pets was received with a warm welcome from moviegoers – to the tune of $103.1 million. This is a massive victory for Illumination Entertainment, not only because it won the box office, but also because it crushed early projected numbers – which had it debuting somewhere in the $80 million neighborhood.
Lump-on a contribution of $42.6 million for foreign markets, and it brings The Secret Life of Pets’ worldwide total to a healthy $145.7 million (produced on $75 million).

It was a tremendous run on top for the Disney sequel/spin-off, however it was to be expect that The Secret Life of Pets would eat into its reign. To date, Finding Dory has grossed an impressive $422.5 million on the domestic front, and is now the highest grossing domestic film of 2016 – surpassing Captain America: Civil War ($406.2 million). Add-on $220.2 million from abroad, and it brings the film’s worldwide total to $642.7 million.

Zac Efron’s latest comedy, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, debuted in fourth with $16.6 million. While fourth is hardly notable for a debut, the return is solid – besting the $11.1 debut of Efron’s previous film, Dirty Grandpa. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates was produced on $33 million.

Rounding out the top-5 is The Purge: Election Year – adding $11.7 million. In a short two week’s time, Election Year has grossed $58.1 million, domestically – against a miniscule $10 million
