Urban generations in post-colonial cities have been characterised by the development of certain movements, architectural edifices and socio-cultural infrastructural facilities. Most of these have, over time, gone into extinction though their relevance to the urban milieu is not in question. Restoration of these legacies, in particular the cinema, would assist in the sustainable socio-cultural linkage of at least the immediate urban community. From the Victorian period, emphasis on entertainment of a western nature was a prominent feature of the Lagos social life. Such entertainment included operatic productions known as Christian cantatas and film shows. Towards the late 90’s they have converted the Cinemas then to places of worship and lockup shops e.g. the pen Cinema Agege and The Queen Cinema in Dugbe Adamasingba, Ibadan. Internet-google The cinema in Nigeria from the pre-colonial days has been a veritable tool for development, education, propaganda, and nationalism. This goes a long way to show the potency of this medium and its importance to our existence. Since 1979 when the Nigerian council for Arts and Culture organised a seminar on the film and culture development, the Nigerian film culture has witnessed a lot of changes. Also, since the advent of the home videos in Nigeria, the cinema has witnessed a lot of changes too. To this end, this work will examine these changes in terms of the managerial aspect and where the cinema stands in Nigeria today but majorly in Ibadan. These are the people who take care of the day-to-day running of the organisation. The organisation’s administration must be structured in such a way that it makes optimal use of the abilities of its employees. In other words, Film House cinema must be well planned to achieve its laid down goals. Although management may seem to be less imposing of the many activities in the organisation, the smooth running of an organisation depends on its management. The essence of art administration and management in any art centre requires the careful organisation and co-ordination of the efforts of various people working together in order to achieve the set goals and objectives of the organisation in the bid to promote, and present the rich cultural heritage of a people to the world at large and also to create an ideal situation in which their performances and programme of activities is expected to be excellent and of great interest to the society. Art, through its functions of entertainment, education and information fulfils other functions within the society. It is generally expressive in nature and as such evokes response; not merely communicating, but beyond that, evolving a response within the audience or individual for social change.
