In this lesson, students show their knowledge of who are the people in their family and their relationships to each other but they also show their misconception that family is only composed of mum, dad and children. This misconception will be challenge when students learn a range of family structure including extended families, sole-parent families and grandparents as guardian. However, the students who learn about themselves are also learning about their family and through this, students will develop the sense of identity and the sense of belongingness (Department of Education and Employment in Workplace Relations (DEEWR), 2009). The students would be encouraged to develop their literacy skills as they discuss and give information to the whole class about their family (ACARA, 2015). The class discussion would encourage other children to listen attentively and ask questions. The purpose of comparing and contrasting two different families in terms of their family roles is for the students to re-think their understanding that all families in the world have the same roles. It also help students to understand families from the other culture in terms of their roles, family sizes and structure and understand that some of the household objects that other culture used can be different to what Australian families are using and sometimes it can be considered as an old practice or not being used anymore in Australian families.
