About 150 million years ago, many islands of Fiji were created from volcanic action, sedimentary deposit, and some coral. As far as we know, the first human inhabitants were Melanesian. It is said that the tribe that found the islands were led by Chief Lutunasobasoba They lived on the island for about 3,500 years. Then around February 6, 1643, Fiji made its first contact with Europeans. Abel Tasman, a very famous Dutch explorer, who found many famous islands in the Southern Pacific Ocean, discovered Vanua, a Fijian island about 177 kilometers (about 110 miles), north of Suva. Studies conducted by California State University, found that 10 percent of all of Fiji's plants can only be grown in Fiji. Coral reefs are very important in the Fijian ecosystem. Coral reefs are one of the most important features in the world. They are homes for almost any form ocean life. Four coral reefs are combine one major reef system. The coral reefs are the outside barrier reef, Inside Barrier Reef, Great Astrolabe, and the Fringing Reef. Altogether, the reefs combined cover 3,869 square miles. Most of the animals are discovered, although some are still being discovered to this day. Fiji heavily protects its reefs and vandalism caused can become fines or even some jail
