European and Asian immigrants came to America with multiple unknown animals. Most of these foreign animals hurt or destroyed the land and the ecosystem. One of these none native animals is known as a wild hog (Suidae). Feral swine (Sus scrofa), often found in the United States, come from a variety of domesticated swine. These include: the Eurasian wild boar and African boar hybrids. The first documented domestic swine was used for food purposes in Hawaii around 750-1000; but it was hundreds of years later when Spanish explorers brought domestic swine to the United States mainland. Unfortunately, in the 1960s, domestic swine began running rampant in more than half of the country. The majority of swine were searching for food sources, …show more content…
Outside of the USA, they have been known to have the following prey: lambs, goats, baby cattle, and other exotic game native to the land. Death to animals usually happens when the feral swine bites the neck region or even crushes the head of the animal. Although meat is only a small portion of their daily diet in a usual scenario, it still causes an economic loss to the farmers and land owners that raise the livestock for monetary reasons. For example, in Australia, there has been a significant impact of death in the sheep population. The feral swine have attacked the newborn lambs and have killed the full grown adult, which has impacted the farmers by loss of wool, veal and just the overall cattle production. Feral swine are extremely smart. These swine have been known to stick around the fields during birthing and will attack both the mother and the calf. The attraction possibly comes from how easy the prey is to get and the strong smell of the afterbirth, with the fetal tissue. These pests do not specifically pick out certain age groups, but the newborn and immature animals are obviously the easier of targets and usually the victims. Feral swine scavenge dead animals, including themselves. They consume everything of the animal, which makes it very difficult for livestock farmers to really get a specific number on how many are being killed. This also makes it difficult for the farmer to differentiate between predation and low productivity in the herds that they keep. The way feral swine feed is distinct, if looked for in a farm field. Their tracks are a major clue, but they also feed the same way every time by eating all of the animal but the skin. Coyotes are also a major predator of many farm animals and can be mixed up with the swine due to how they feed and leave the skin in the same way. Both of these animals though cause serious problems but the problem intensity of the swine in the USA is not specifically known. Now
