They were supposed to stay home, cook, and be a mother to their children. During World War one, the roles they had slowly begun to change. More women were joining the workforce. They were taking over the jobs the men had left after going off to war. Women liked this newfound freedom. When the men came back, most women had to give up their jobs. There were a few women who refused to go back to their traditional roles. Now that they had experienced something new, they did not want to go back to staying at home. They did not want to abide to what society considered to be feminine. More working women joined the suffrage movements. They hoped that with the right to vote their working conditions would improve. The nineteenth Amendment may have given woman the right to vote in the 1920s, but they were still not seen equally to men. There were many topics that women fought for. One being the birth control issue and another equal pay. Woman wanted the right to choose what happened to their bodies. They wanted to get paid the same amount as men for the same work. Back in the 1900s a man was someone who would bring home the paycheck and was seen as the head of their household. In modern times more women are made to be in charge of their house.
