Oh, how the times have changed. Whether it is socially, politically, or environmentally, the world is evolving. Some of the changes are for the better and some for the worse. One adjustment that has seemed to be put aside in society recently, is how much time families spend together. The main source of familial bonding is normally dinnertime. However, many families do not take advantage of this opportunity. Only about forty percent of American families eat dinner together more than once a week. That has drastically declined from the eighty percent of families who regularly ate together in the previous generation (Sweat). However, the amount of time that is actually spent with family is decreasing. Children are involved in sports and academics, and the parents are busy with their work lives. Many people do not realize the benefits that come with spending more time with family. The children are less stressed, tend to do better in school, and are less likely to fall into substance abuse. Also, the kids are typically less violent and lead healthier lifestyles in general. The parents are happier and tend to be less stressed. The more time the parents spend together decreases the chances of a divorce. Additionally, a stronger emotional bond is developed between the parents and the children. However, not every family needs to spend the same amount of time with each other. But, if finding time for family is difficult, scheduling one night a week to eat together is a good way to start. Even something as simple as watching television with family will be very beneficial to everyone as well. Many parents and children are very into eating healthy and being fit. If spending time with family benefits health, why do more families not take advantage of
