Illegal immigrants steal the jobs of the American born citizens. Illegal immigrants don’t lower wages. Illegal immigrants do not provide for the society. These are all false stereotypes that lead the common American to believe that immigrants are an impediment to the United States. Since stereotypes are used excessively, now is the time to ensure immigrants are receiving the treatment and care they deserve. Although unauthorized immigrants are often seen as a burden to the United States, the community actually benefits socially and economically by the expansion of population with these people. Instead of recognizing the negative aspects of these immigrants, emphasis should be put on the good that they are doing for the country. The common stereotype portrays illegal immigrants to be uneducated, lazy, and wasteful; when in reality the average American does not consider the trials of being an immigrant. Without proper documentation like a birth certificate or passport, civil rights such as healthcare or Social Security cannot be provided. The illegal immigration population struggle more to obtain health benefits compared to the average citizen. The service given to unauthorized immigrants estimates to one percent of individuals that are helped overall (CBO 6). The absurd statistics show that about fifty to seventy five percent of illegal immigrants pay federal, state, and local taxes(CBO 6) while not benefiting from the medical attention they need. Americans take for granted that immigrants work hard and still obtain almost no benefits. One of the biggest stereotypes is that immigrants steal the job opportunities of citizens, while the majority of the jobs occupied by undocumented immigrants are lower waged employment that are not taken by citizens regardless(CBO 6). These lower entry occupations consist of laborious field work, construction, house cleaning, and other hard working tasks. While the demand for lower waged workers increases, the need for the jobs the immigrants serve rise as well. The labor force demands these lower waged employees to exist, and without them businesses would diminish and cause workers to lose their job. America was essentially found and influenced by immigration which contributed to the social culture developed today. Although the concept of immigrants sounds invading, the amount of migrating cultures flourishes with new experiences, cultural opportunities and diversity. Whether the experience is encountering another language, or learning a recipe these people have more to offer than Americans give them credit for. A variety of cultures bring new traditions and customs such as family orientation, styles of cooking, and even new attire. For instance, Californians enjoy Mexican food as well as incorporate the fashionable style of headwraps and scarves from the Middle East and even India. Many Americans are oblivious to how the diversity can enhance their mental awareness towards immigrants. The more positive encounters and knowledge a person has with an illegal immigrant is one step closer to changing their perspective on them.
