Throughout the course of the semester our class has discussed the controversial topic of censorship. On one hand, some argue that censorship is detrimental to society; whereas others, think that censorship is beneficial and reassuring. According to Potter Stewart, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, “Censorship reflects society's lack of confidence in itself. It is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime.” Society’s desire to censor material that it finds objectionable is detrimental, because many people in our society use censorship as a means to run away from reality. Censorship of books is one way censorship is used in society to block out things in life that people don’t think should be talked about. Information in books is important to society. In the story Fahrenheit 451 the author Ray Bradbury states “There must be something in books, something we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. In athletics the act of not honoring the tradition of saluting the flag has caused an uproar in society. Recently the NFL player Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem due to his beliefs of freedom of speech. However, according to people in society many felt and still feel it was disrespectful to the United States, its flag, and its military”. Kaepernick stated"I have great respect for the men and women that have fought for this country,I have family, I have friends that have gone and fought for this country. And they fight for freedom, they fight for the people, they fight for liberty and justice, for everyone, That’s not happening”.
