The most ironic thing about aging is wishing you were a certain age. I look back at when I was younger and think of how stupid I was for wanting to be older, because I didn’t know how stressful it can be. These days all I want is to be young again and not have a care in the world. While my elementary days were much simpler, I now see how blind I was, not everything was sunshine and rainbows. I would say the “hardest” thing about these times were going between my mom and dad. Their divorce was still fairly fresh. I say “hardest” because I didn’t fully understand their relationship after the divorce. I truly was very blind to the struggles and problems our family faced. The thing that sticks out most in my mind during the last few years of

Learning about successful aging in this chapter gives me a reason to feel more optimistic about aging because, in the book, it states that “everyone wants to age “successful,” although we may differ in how we define successful aging. To some, this may mean maintaining good health and being free of diseases that might limit physical and mental skills and the ability to actively participate in desired daily activities (Rowe & Kahn,1998). As a person who believes in the saying of this quote. I never thought about successful aging to be more than just that. Until Kristen Lowry, her colleague, and David Snowdon talked about their ideas and research.…

The Changing Demographics of Aging Seniors in America America’s senior population is experiencing considerable growth: By the year 2030, it is projected that there will be roughly 72 million seniors living in the United states, or about 1 in every 5 people (Ortman 6). The oldest of the Baby Boomers became a part of the over 65 segment in 2011, and will continue to age and add to the senior population over the next 20 years (Frey 28). This increase in senior population will significantly affect planning by policy-makers, as stated by Rosenberg (134). The ratio of caregivers to seniors is decreasing: during the decades from 2010 to 2030, caregivers aged 45 to 65, will only increase slightly, while the number of seniors 80 and older will multiply…

One common myth is the idea that older people are not interested in sex or intimacy. The most prominent form of ageism in the senior citizen’s life is the injustices in the health care system. Senior citizens reported that they are more likely to report ageism in their daily lives than racism or sexism (Marshall 2007, p. 258). Social Security and Medicare are two of the most attacked programs in the governmental budget, never physically altered because senior benefits are the third-rail of the budget (Campbell 2003, p. 32-33). The third-rail is the electrified rail of train tracks, and if a politician attempts to change Social Security then they will lose support. Rather than changing the benefits, they simply refuse to reform it and adjust it to fit modern situations and prices, and “borrow” money from their budget, until…

After the thirty-first of May, the first day of class, I sparked an interest in the psychology of aging. The videos and discussion in class reminded me of my favorite person, one who is an older adult.…
