The idea that a train can be a place to meet, part ways, work, think, or observe. It’s an object that can have several meanings, leaving it up to the reader to decide what that may…
This can be simply answered with the fact that while trains started to become the main form of transportation, the stations were made bigger and more ornate. Each city put in an exceptional amount of effort,…
There are electric trains and subways. The electric trains run more smooth and are a nicer built. The electric trains were better to use because they used electricity instead of burning coal. There are also subways that travel underground and they are used to transport people from place to place. Subways are an easy way for people to travel to work quickly.…
Summer-time in the city brought me to different parts of the MTA that I never encountered before. Riding on the A line for the first time, I found myself catching a glimpse of these little fellows as my train pulled into the 14th Street station. Small, whimsical, pudgy (yes, I said pudgy) statuettes depict commonplace figures, such as a grimacing police woman, an officer (guarding a ball of tin foil), a homeless man sleeping under the stairway (the statue was placed there deliberately, I should think) and many more. As I walked by these figures, I found myself thinking back to my high school history class. These figure look a lot like the cartoon newspaper drawings of the late 1800- early 1900s depicting the bankers and politicians…
Being near railroad crossings and railroads in general can be a very dangerous thing to be around. However, as long as we practice the right safety measures and precautions we can go past them without injury. To start there are road signs that you should always follow while driving near railroad crossings. At most railroad crossings there are crossing gates, flashing lights, and loud bells if to make sure you know that a train is approaching. You should never go around them because a train will come and they have a very difficult time stopping quickly, so if you were to get stuck on the tracks there would be nothing that the train could do.…
Rail Road Crossings can pose a serious danger to those driving in vehicles that don't listen or pay attention to rail-way crossings. It is a simple law of physics that tells us that if a train and vehicle collide, the vehicle is going to lose every time. There are many things that I learned I should do to help keep myself and my passengers safe when driving around trains. First, you should always slow down when you come to a railroad crossing.…
According to “ Mute in an English-only World” by Chang-Rae Lee, for Lee’s mother English sometimes made her hurt. English was not so funny for her and always caused troubles. She had lots of harrowing experiences because she could not speak English fluently. I can understand that feeling. I have made a lot of jokes due to the language barrier since I arrive in the United States, and some of them were embarrassing.…
“Tramps, Hobos, Beats and Crusties” There is something romantic about hearing the sound of a train in the distance. It has a way of enticing the imagination--it conjures up sepia images of hardship and freedom, and leaves us with an unexplained longing. It is as if the railroad links us to our country’s past, a nostalgic reminder that some things never change. In 2008 I spent the better part of a year hopping freight and hitchhiking from Maine to Washington. Although I only rode a handful of trains, I learned a great deal about the culture that surrounds train hopping.…

I was working at on the Chicago Transit Authority, (CTA) train station in the customer assistant service department. My job responsibilities included assisting customers with directions and handling of emergency situations, monitoring and handling elevator entrapments, as well as viewing camera film. I assisted and helped people who have fallen on the tracks, dropped things on the tracks. Sometimes my job would just consist of helping people get to their destinations, but mainly the thing I mentioned as well and documenting and reporting incidents.…
The next day, my legs were tired but that didn’t prevent me from having an enjoyable day. First we went to the Staten Island Ferry where we rode a ferry past the Statue of Liberty. The ferry was full of people but there were three floors to fit everyone on. It also moved surprisingly fast for such a sizeable boat. The next site on the agenda was to visit Grand Central Station, a rapidly fast train station that carries people from all over the country to and from New York.…

There are many important things to remember about driving, walking, or riding your bike over a cross walk. First you need to remember when you drive across tracks, if no lights are flashing you need to turn your radio down, listen, and look both ways before you cross the tracks. If the lights are flashing and there is no train in sight for at least a mile in both directions then you can continue, and cross the tracks. Next, If you and your buddies are riding your bike, scooter, skateboard, or any gadget you need to get off of it look both ways before you cross then walk your ride over.…
