Great post! I agree with you that the nurse should be aware of the patient's birthing plan. The patient can include skin-to-skin contact in her birthing plan. I also agree with you that the registered nurse can offer the skin-to-skin contact to the mother. While offering it to her the nurse could also explain the benefits that it provides. With your stories from social media, it seems that most of the mothers just got the initial skin-to-skin contact when the newborn was laid on their abdomen immediately following the birth and then the baby was taken away. I am not sure to why this happened but if the mother was unable to continue the skin-to-skin contact the healthcare team could have allowed the father to step in to do it if possible.
