So many people believe that speaking in tongues, should only be done in public unless there is a prophecy to follow. This comes from the scripture 1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:27-32‬ ‭KJV. If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. As this states that if there is a tongue spoken

Yet, James makes it clear that this cannot be the case, because those who speak without restriction or control are not truly religious. It is especially needful that people are mindful of their choice of words. She attended the church that William Seymour was pastoring. Although Seymour had not yet received the baptism of the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in other tongues, he was convinced that it was biblical and preached the message with great fervency. Impressed by Seymour’s character and message, Terry told her church about him upon her return to California and they invited him to visit. Seymour agreed to go, much to the shock of Charles Parham and others in Houston.…

According to Craig Van Gelder, writer of “The Ministry of the Missional Church, “The book of Acts is a natural starting point for gaining insight into the ministry of the Spirit. Acts 2:33 tells us “exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.” The entrance of the Holy Spirit brings about some very powerful and profound things, when the believe allows the Ministry of the Spirit to operate in their lives. The believer has to open up and receive the different ministry of the Holy Spirit.…

Galatians 5:22-23 states, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Throughout the scriptures, it talks about identifying the Spirit with a burning in the bosom, however, that is seldom the case. Doctrine and Covenants 8:2 explains how the Spirit communicates with people. “Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart. D & C 9:8 states, “But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is sacred save it…

Something that sets the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints apart from many others, is its emphasis on personal revelation. Members are not expected to rely wholly on the word of leaders to find truth, or to blindly trust what anyone else says. While it is essential to have faith in prophets and the scriptures, one of the greatest blessings of the gospel is that we can then turn that faith into action, by applying principles we have been taught and discovering the truth for ourselves. As Latter Day Saints, we are encouraged to ask questions and seek out this knowledge! The key here, however, is to know where we can and should turn to find answers to those questions.…
