Children are usually seen as innocent, as they play around with others and are just balls of energy. Often seen as simply kids who have no experience in the outside world until they grow older. However, sometimes a child’s play can go wrong and can affect another’s life. When these incidents happen where a death is involved, it’s often easy for society to look at the offender as a murder who should be in prison for the rest of their life despite what age the offender may be. While juveniles committing heinous crimes should be punished, they should also be given the chance to rejoin society at an appropriate age; therefore juveniles who redeem themselves should be able to get released earlier and be able to put their life together.…
Juvenile crime has been an increasing point of debate in recent years. Many people argued whether they should be sentenced as adults or not when convicted of a serious crime, such as murder. Some argue that juveniles deserve to be treated as such despite the crime they have committed, while others believe they are to be treated as adults. This resulted in many juveniles receiving adult sentences like life in prison without parole. Some juveniles commit crimes without a thought of the risks, while some carefully plan out their crimes and get a serious thrill out of it.…
It’s easy to want to believe that all juveniles are incident and unable to commit a horrible crime intentionally, but this is simply wishful thinking. Should juveniles accused of violent crime’s be tried and sentenced as adults? Well it depends on two main factors, the specific violence and whether or not the child demonstrated a full understanding of what he or she was actually doing. Up until around age 7, children are in a pre-operational way of thinking. In most violent situations juveniles do not comprehend their actions.…
Juveniles are not mentally capable to understand the crime they commit like an adult is, thus they should not be tried as an adult. A child, just like any living thing, goes through developmental stages. Throughout their growth periods, juveniles learn new skills and so do their brains. In a study, “Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis of New York University led comprehensive diagnostic evaluations of 14 juveniles on death row (at that time, 40 percent) in four states. She found that nine had major neuropsychological disorders and seven had psychotic disorders since early childhood” (Ortiz).…
For all of these reasons, Juveniles who commit adult crimes should not be tried as adults. First of all, Juveniles brains aren’t fully developed. A persons brain isn’t developed until they're in their mid 20’s, and the last part of the brain to develop is the part that deals with consequences. This means that when a juvenile breaks the law, they aren’t going to grasp…
According to the Law and Human Behavior (2013) it would be more probable for a sixteen year old who perpetrated a violent crime, to be recommended to be sent to adult court than a fourteen year old. Youth are usually without responsibility and are not very mature. For this reason they are less likely to consider the penalty for committing violent crimes. Adult minds are more mature therefore, they are more likely to think about the consequences of their actions and behaviors. It is stated in the International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health (2015) there is a great quantity of proof that in many ways, youth who commit crimes are dissimilar to adults who commit crimes.…
Some people have different opinions and think that juveniles should be held accountable for their actions. Mary Onelia has written many articles for student newspaper at the university of California in San Diego. She argued in the article Juveniles Should Be Tried as Adults in Certain Circumstances, “if you do and adult crime, you do the adult time.” People forget about the victims. People worry about the offender but don’t realize what the victims is going through.…
As we have relevant systems to discipline teenagers who commit crimes it seems unfair for them not to take responsibility for their actions. It seems absurd that someone can commit a violent crime such as murder and not be punished due to the fact they are a teenager. If you are old enough to commit a crime you are old enough to take the punishment which comes along with it and as we already have a justice system in place which takes age into account, there is reason as to why teenagers should not be held responsible for their crimes. There are a variety of differences between the juvenile justice system and the criminal justice system, one of the main ones being that teenagers on trial are not looked at as having committed a crime, they are…
Teens being tried as adults in my opinion needs to be expanded throughout the country. When teens think they are grown enough to murder, rob,or steal;they need to get grown folk charges. I’m not saying that all crimes need adult times,it should depend on the crime you did. If it was an intended murder by a teen then yes, I believe that they should get tried as an adult. Also if it is a major crime;for example, grand theft or stealing a car they shall also get tried as an adult.…
Should juvenile offenders be tried as adults? If a child is a juvenile offender for something real bad such as anything that has to do with murder, yes I believe they deserve to be tried as adults. Most kids who get involved in murders know exactly what they are doing. If the child who is a juvenile offender does something such as stealing, vandalizing, loitering, etc. Those kids should just be tried as juveniles instead of adults.…
There have been many opinions on juveniles being convicted as adults on the crimes they have committed. When it comes to some of these harsh crimes, who could not punish the individual to the fullest? It does not matter how old a person is because everyone knows the difference between right and wrong. If someone is raised differently and believes it is okay to murder another human, than they cannot just change their mindset. An individual that makes and adult decision should have the same consequences.…
Paying the Consequence: Juveniles and Life Sentences Could juveniles be facing life sentences? Juveniles are under the age of 18, which means they are not adults. Some Juveniles end up making the unthinkable decision of murdering another human and in 1990 only 2.9% of 2,234 juveniles were sentenced to life. That means that 2,166 murders depending on the actual sentence they received were returned back to society. When a juvenile commits a crime they need to have the same punishment as an adult, especially if it is a life sentence crime.…
Juveniles should not be tried as adults for it is wrong to hold adolescents, under the legal age, to adult standards. If children do not even receive the same rights as adults in the first place, it makes no sense to try them in adult court. These juveniles should have the opportunity to be rehabilitated in a positive manner, for they tend to come from troubled households and violent neighborhoods. In over half of the cases these troubled kids don’t know any different way than a life of crime when surrounded by both social and environmental factors that influence their delinquent actions. One must commemorate that juveniles are mentally underdeveloped, and still have time to innovate if their issues are dealt with precisely and accurately.…
The decision of juveniles being tried as adults in the world of criminal justice has usually been an object of controversy. Some agree that an adolescent who commits a serious crime like murder deserves to be penalized exactly like an adult; while others declare that a minor should not face the same punishment as an adult. However, no matter how severe or appalling a crime may be, juveniles should not be tried as adults; the reason being that everyone should be granted the chance to learn from their mistakes. Juveniles should not be punished as adults, simply because they biologically distinct from adults. Teenagers are the midsection between children and adults.…
Today, more youths are involved in gangs, murders, and assaults than history has shown. So, if these children are capable of committing adult crimes, shouldn’t they face adult consequences? It seems that the severity of juvenile crime has risen so much, that it is hard to distinct it from adult crimes. On the other hand, most adult offenders we find today, who commit murder or assault are not first time offenders. The unfortunate thing is that a survey given by the Pretrial Services Resource Center found that an astonishing number of juveniles in adult facilities were charged with nonviolent crimes (ABCNews.com: Juveniles in Adult Jails.…
