According to the World Health Organization (2016) poverty leads to bad health because individuals are constrained to environments that put their health at risk including being without decent shelter, clean water and adequate sanitation. Not only does it put them at risk but also due to the financial barriers of poverty these individuals are unable to afford quality health care or fear the cost of health care. For example, if a mother living in poverty with her children has to choose between using her last dollars on food for dinner versus using her last dollars on medication, she will most likely choose the food and ignore her health concern.
