Stages of Hypertension
Hypertension, the condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is high, is a very common condition. Only 42% of Americans considered to have normal blood pressure readings. (1) Normal blood pressure reading should be less than 120 over 80. Blood pressure readings can be recorded by measuring the systolic pressure, the pressure inside the arteries when the heart beats, and the diastolic, the pressure between beats. Hypertension can be categorized into three main stages which are prehypertension, hypertension stage 1, and hypertension stage 2. (Further more,) it is important to understand each stage, for each of the stages has its different symptoms and ways of treatment.
The first stage of hypertension is known as prehypertension. Patients are diagnosed with prehypertension if their systolic blood pressure is between 120 and 139 and diastolic is between 80 and 89.(1) Being a prehypertensive means that you are at great risk of developing hypertension. Prehypertension is almost asymptomatic. The readings of hypertension stage 2 are over 160 for the systolic and over 100 for the diastolic.(1) If not treated, hypertension stage 2 could cause strokes, kidney failure, heart failure, and many other fatal conditions.(4) Because of it severity, hypertension stage 2 requires immediate interference from doctors. Patients will be prescribed two or three different medications to control their blood pressure and limit its danger.
