In the key areas, there are different stages of development known as milestones which is the typical age a child or young person would meet these development milestones. These however can vary, especially if the child has a learning difficulty, disability or health problem. The sequence of development is usually the same as one area must develop first before another area, for example a child will learn to walk before they learn to run.
The stages of development are categorised into the following age groups:
• 0-3 years
• 3-7 years
• 7-12 years
• 12-19 years
