Sustainability Reflection

Introduction
Experiments in Sustainability, Kindness, and Social Responsibility; after completing a four week survey of my personal habits which include; what I generate and manage as waste, along with my comportment in the public eye, I found this experience to be quite extensive as well as enlightening.
Sustainability Experiment: I have done these types of trials before in other classes. Therefore, this time around was more of a revision than a realization. It was important for me to have a review or to revisit how much refuse I create as well as recycle. For the most part, I have would have to say that I was very contentious before the experiment. However, after a four week appraisal; I was able to refine some of my habits or correct some

And I have been for a while, therefore when it came to doing this part of the experiment it was more of a review course for me. Since I do not generate much waste I think it was easy to keep track of what was going in the garbage and what was being recycled or composted. Once I had obtain a base line for the experiment the first two week of the trial is what I set aside to gather the raw data. I found that I was not as stringent as I should have been. It is easy to fall into old habits and I see that is what I had been doing. The next two weeks of the trial was set at trying to improve i.e. reduce my solid waste. I think for the most part I did revise some bad habits and as well as reaffirmed some as well. One problem that I have found during the years and not during the trial is how to recycle electronic components. Most office work places have this type of recycling set up but what about the individual where is the student, the labourer to do when they need to recycle their electronic components. The recycling center here is not located on a bus route and since the above mentioned may not have their own transportation why would they pay money to recycle electronics when they could easily throw it into a plastic bag and put it in a garbage can; food for thought I …show more content…
And once that was done, the person who was gossiping about the other did agree with the complements that had presented for everyone to hear. As well, the group also agreed with my other comment and the conversation went in a different direction after that. Now I am not suggesting that every time I do this it work out well. But every time that I do it, I know that I have done the right thing. Moreover, I am a firm believer in “if you keep doing what you are doing you are going to keep getting what you are

In the article ”This is Paradise: Puente Hills Landfill, City of Industry, California” written by Jeanne Marie Laskas we are introduced to the concept that as humans have evolved so has our manufacturing, leaving, mountains of trash in our evolutionary wake. In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care.…

It is impossible for the youth to escape Earth’s contaminated environment, which will be their harsh reality for decades to come. Maintaining an eco-friendly lifestyle is nearly impossible in today’s world due to society’s constant industrialization and innovations. However, it is possible to significantly reduce the level of mistreatment and strain induced on Canada’s ecosystems. Within the St. Brother Andre community there is no active club protecting the environment for future years even though as Catholics we are called to protect God’s creation. Although all schools produce litter and waste resources, it is possible for the school community to be more environmentally friendly by creating a group that continually strives for reducing their…

Good afternoon/Good morning today I will be present a multimodal presentation and photocopy about sustainability in Ferny Hills. Sustainability is when we look after the land so it the same or better for the next generations. To do this we use energy from renewable sources they include solar panels and hydroelectricity. To get water in a sustainable way we can use desalination plants which take the salt out of sea water we will also need to be more conservative when it comes to using water.…

When people are asked to think about the environment, many different ideas come about. For Garrett Hardin, it was the idea of the tragedy of the commons that was most concerning to him. He wrote an essay about the exploitation of a resource used by many people. In a short-term aspect, this is beneficial for the developer, but over time the resource is damaged beyond repair (Hardin). He explained the damage to resources as a result of greed.…

It has come to my concern and attention that recycling should be mandatory in ISA. Americans make more than 200 million tons of garbage each year due to the garbage outburst that is not recycled. I personally believe that recycling should be mandatory in ISA because the EPA system averages out that 75% of the American waste stream of garbage is only 30% recycled which isn’t even half of it. Therefore ISA should go green and have recycle bins which then the recycled items will be processed to a recycling company. One of the reasons recycling should be mandatory is because it will protect wildlife from decreasing the risk of killing an animal from lake to sea, or from forest to rivers.…

Over the course of the semester, we have discussed the negative consequences resulting from the way we, as a society, dispose of our garbage. Most of our trash generally ends up in landfills where harmful chemicals are washed off exposing surrounding areas to harmful pollutants which are then able to cause extensive damage to both the environment and the species which inhabit the area. This method of waste disposal, while convenient for both major businesses and individual civilians alike, has already proven detrimental to the planet and its many species, and has called for a change in the way we manage and dispose of these toxic materials. “Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things,” answers that call by providing a number of feasible solutions and changes we can make, not only how we discard our trash, but also how we can avoid the need to create any more.…

As landfills pile higher and higher, the entire earth is hurt by the pollution let out by the stacks upon stacks of garbage. There is a way to reduce the piles of used garbage bags full of rotten food, though; composting. A school of two-hundred students produces three-thousand pounds of waste from their cafeteria each year, over half of which can be recycled, greatly reducing how much garbage goes into landfills. Composting should be required in schools. It costs very little, can give students a great learning opportunity, and helps the environment.…

There is one planet that is inhabitable, so as humans we should do everything in our power to make the Earth sustainable. As many think recycling promises a brighter future for our planet, they are quite frankly being deceived. We are more likely to drive ourselves into the ground by funding recycling than to just leave the garbage to, quite literally, rot in its own filth. To some people recycling is just a lost cause, but to many others’ it has wedged its way into becoming a part of his or her lifestyle.…

Social sustainability has gained increased recognition for being key aspects of the sustainability debate in recent years. Previously, the concepts of environmental and economic sustainability were dominant in the social sustainability debate and it wasn’t until the 1990s that social issues of society were added into the subject of sustainability (Drexhage and Murphy, 2010). Social sustainability is defined by “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (World Commission on Environment and Development,2009:40.) A combination of the increasing population, rising levels of consumption and a limited amount of resources creates issues in the ability to meet the…

To meet the growing needs of the human population, the global society turned to other method to accommodate our needs, leading the shift from environmental protection towards sustainability. This activity displayed how we at Mid Pacific distribute our trash. In order to find this information we took trash from our cafeteria and saw what students thought should go in the trash can because not everything you throw away is actually trash. I learned a lot about waste and how a lot of people do not throw it away properly. What shocked me the most was that so many people threw their plastic bottles in the trash can. At our school you are able to leave the bottle on top of the trash can and it will be taken later to the recycling bin.…
