The gas chamber was first used in Nevada on 1924.(Hydebush 3) Gee John was the first person to be executed by the gas chamber.(Hydebush 3) At first they had tried to pump it into Gee John’s cell while he was asleep, but that failed because it leaked.(Hydebush 3) It is used in 5 states only. (Hydebush 3) Sometimes the gas chamber may fail to kill the prisoner, so they use lethal injection as a backup plan.
A botched case of the gas chamber is the death of Donald Eugene Harding.(Radelet 12) He was pronounced dead 10 ½ minutes later after the cyanide tablets were dropped.(Radelet 12) After a while, his skin turned from red to purple.(Radelet 12) During the execution, Harding thrashed and struggled violently against the restraining straps. Richard Traystman points out that,"The person is unquestionable experiencing pain and extreme anxiety...The sensation is similar to the pain felt by a person during a heart attack, where essentially the heart is being deprived of oxygen." For lethal injection, they have to find a vein that works in order to kill them while during the gas chamber’s they just need to make the gas and wait until the prisoner suffocates. The gas chamber consists of cyanide gas and sulfur. Once inside the prisoner is told to take deep breaths to die faster.
