The characters in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck face struggles such as the idea of loneliness and motivation, when trying to achieve their goal. People in the 30’s were not very motivated to get what was needed. People would always talk but never strive to achieve what the person wanted. This is shown when Crooks is talking to Lennie, about getting a farm. Lennie tells Crooks about the dream, yet Crooks explains “‘ They come an’ they quit an’ go on; an’ every damn one of em's got a little piece of land in his head ”’ ( Steinbeck 74). This was because of the difficulty to find jobs. In the second paragraph about motivation issues, Crooks talks about many people with the same ideas as George and Lennie. That many people such as George and Lennie have ideas on wanting to do something, but never seem to get the job done. George also gives up on the dream, because the sole motivation of wanting to get land was Lennie. John Steinbeck was trying to prove that the American dream was hard to get. Mainly because of the way a migrant workers life was shaped. Both themes connect to the American dream because if the person isn’t agitated easily, and is motivated, the American dream can be
