The main idea in the text is racial discrimination. The help gives perspectives of two black maids and Miss Skeeter. The two black maids are, Aibileen who works for one of Miss Skeeter’s friends Elizabeth Leefolt. The other maid is Minny Jackson who at first was working for Miss Hilly’s (another one of Miss Skeeter’s friends) mother but then started working for Miss Celia Foote after she got fired. Through these perspectives we see the racial discrimination that they get because of their colour. An example of the racial discrimination in the novel is with the Home Help Sanitation Initiative. It is an initiative about having outdoor bathrooms for the help at their white employers house. Miss Hilly started this initiative because she believes “It’s just plain dangerous.” as the black people carry different diseases as white people and it wouldn’t be good for the white people if they shared the same toilet as they could get the different diseases that black people apparently have “Everybody knows they carry different kinds of diseases than we do.”. …show more content…
This examples shows the separation that there was between the white and black. The black were seen as second class and weren’t seen as equal to the white, all because of their colour. They weren’t judged on their personality, they were judged on their colour. Miss Hilly saying that the black carry different diseases is based on stereotypes not on facts and the help shows how influentially stereotypes can be. How when people see someone they base them on the stereotypes they have heard. This relates to the world today as people still judge people on stereotypes and it shows how hard it can be to break away from the stereotypes and to not judge them on stereotypes. The racial discrimination in the novel on black people were based on stereotypes and stories that people have told about them having different diseases etc. A character in the novel that I found interesting was Miss Skeeter because she wasn’t like the other women in the book. Instead of getting a man after high school, getting married and having children she went to college and graduated, unlike the other women who either dropped out of college because they found a man or didn’t even go because they already had one. Miss Skeeter didn’t worry about finding a man and getting married, she focused on her studies so she could have a good career, earn her own money and get a good job. Her best friends were Hilly Holbrook and Elizabeth Leefolt and through the book we see her become more and more distant from them as she is different from them and has different views from them, which created more of a divide between them.
