Examples Of Manipulation In One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Nearly everything in this world is a matter of manipulation, whether it may be between two people, by our society, or even just you and the voices inside your head. In the book One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, the Big Nurse, Nurse Ratched, becomes in conflict with Mcmurphy, who recently moved from the work farm, as he opposes all of her policies. Similarly, Christof, the creator from Truman Show written by Andrew Niccol, traps Truman Burbank in a dome where everything is fake and everyone is an actor including his father, wife, and best friend. Identically, in The Children’s Story by James Clavell, a New Teacher takes over Miss Worden’s class and uses propaganda to influence the students in supporting the foreign power. He has always desired to travel to Fiji but, because he is inside a dome, every person he meets hinders him from pursuing that ambition. At the end of the movie, through Burbank’s failed attempt to escape from his place, Christof, through a speaker, finally tells him the truth. Likewise, in The Children’s Story, the New Teacher, who replaces Miss Worden, is immediately adored by the students except for Johnny, as seen when he frankly shows his hostility towards her. However, through the prayer activity wherein he catches her putting the candies on the desks, Johnny was finally drawn to the New Teacher for revealing the truth. The short story is then wrapped up with the idea that the New Teacher was taking advantage of the raw minds of the children by introducing them to the concept of the new government. The multiple conflicts in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Truman Show, and The Children’s Story is a testament that although manipulation may be overwhelming, one must always hold on to what they truly believe
