The movie The Shawshank redemption was produced by Frank Darabont and based off of the Stephen King book The Shawshank Redemption. The film is based around figures of hope for the inmates as a sense of relief to help them by the difficult times. The theme hope is portrayed throughout the film as objects, and in the protagonists Andy Dufresne and Ellis Boyd ‘Red Redding’. The major moments where hope was developed was scenes with music, specifically the scene of the warden’s office and the record player. Hope is also portrayed when Andy is given the pickaxe in relation to the scene in Andy’s cell when carving his name into the wall. Little did Andy know this would be the beginning of a much bigger picture. Upon confrontation of requesting a weapon Andy awaited for Red’s package arrival, the arrival of a pickaxe. Once assured that Red would get the pickaxe for him Andy received a glimmer of hope as to beginning a friendship and assurance to his request. Initially the pickaxe was to help Andy carve rocks, as his hobby in his cell, carving rocks was a hobby that was designed to help the time pass in hope it would remind him of his free life. The pickaxe is a representation of hope as it is what brings Red and Andy through the awkward aurora between them then developing a long lasting friendship.
