Little did Andy know this would be the beginning of a much bigger picture. Upon confrontation of requesting a weapon Andy awaited for Red’s package arrival, the arrival of a pickaxe. Once assured that Red would get the pickaxe for him Andy received a glimmer of hope as to beginning a friendship and assurance to his request. Initially the pickaxe was to help Andy carve rocks, as his hobby in his cell, carving rocks was a hobby that was designed to help the time pass in hope it would remind him of his free life. The pickaxe is a representation of hope as it is what brings Red and Andy through the awkward aurora between them then developing a long lasting friendship. It also developed the theme of hope as he could still have some aspects of his life outside the prison with him and this was the carving of rocks. Andy left Red a harmonica an object of music, as Red is a disbeliever of hope as shown in the film from a conversation where Red says “Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing.
