The Pearl by John Steinbeck is about Kino and his wife Juana and how one pearl will change their life forever. Even though there are many themes in this book, greed is the most important theme. This is shown when Kino needs the doctor and the doctor only care about if kino has money. Also when Kino has to hid the pearl so people don't steal the pearl. Then Kino's wife doesn't like the pearl because Kino changes

The doctor in The Pearl is the most prime example of greed in the beginning on the book. The doctor is a man of money, he will only help you when your able to pay. After the servant asks Kino if he has money and the servant tells the doctor no the doctor says “I,I alone in the world and I am tired of it (Steinbeck 15). The doctor continues to not see Kinos baby until one day he hears that Kino has just got the pearl of the world in his possession. That is when the doctor came to Kino's brush house and said he would treat his baby when the baby was already healed.

He carved for the money and for him and his family to have a better life. Kino knew that he pearl was worth a lot and wouldn't take any price other than the one he thinks the pearl is worth. When Kino denied the pearl buyers and said that he would go somewhere else to get the money he needed. Later when Kino wasn't paying attention Juana took the pearl. In chapter five “Her arm was up to throw when he leaped at her and caught her arm and wrenched the pearl from her” (76). That's when Kino knew that the pearl has left its mark on him.
