Ethical Dilemma
Paul is a strong athlete but, as his teammates experiment with a new drug he is losing ground. The coach seems to know about this problem and has turned a blind eye because it is not illegal since the substance is not very well known. The positive effects of this would be that he does not have to worry about the side effects of the drug that have not been discovered. Also, he will know that he is competing to the best of his own abilities without having to take drugs to stay competitive. The main negative affect for Paul will be that he will most likely lose his starting spot on the team since he cannot physically compete with other players taking the drug. His teammates are most likely putting winning the games above enjoyment of the sport. This is called obsessive passion and was found in athletes to give a positive attitude towards performance enhancing drugs (Wilson & Potwarka, 2015 pg 241). Overall, by not taking the drug he is setting an example for his teammates and keeping himself
