Lies and deceit are the prominent themes in The Great Gatsby. This is seen through Nick’s eyes. He has the uncanny ability to see through people and tell what their real motives and feelings are. Nick didn’t submit to the persona of Gatsby and believe him. He witnessed Tom’s affair with Myrtle. Despite his hatred aversion to this deceit, Nick played a pivotal role in Gatsby’s and Daisy’s affair. In chapter one, Nick visits his cousin Daisy, her husband Tom, and Jordan Baker. Tom preaches the traditional family values upon meeting Nick, but he quickly learns that Tom is cheating on Daisy with a woman named Myrtle in the next chapter. He takes Nick to his affair apartment with Myrtelle and a few other guests and party. Tom preaches these traditional family values to hide his cheating lifestyle. The affair is an example of how deception plays in the book as affairs are a notorious example of deceiving partners. Nick first meets Gatsby at the end of chapter one; however, in chapter three is when the characters officially meet and Nick learns about Gatsby. From the beginning, Gatsby has been trying to manipulate Nick into setting up a meeting between him and Daisy, his former love before going to war; however, Nick decided to help the two for undisclosed reasons. In chapter seven, the two argue over her. Eventually, Daisy cries “Even alone I can’t say I never loved Tom...It wouldn’t be true.” No one in the fight knows what the truth of this debacle is anymore. Tom preaches traditional values and his love for his wife but is cheating on Daisy with Myrtle. Daisy is proclaiming she loves both men or at least did.
