Classism: The Great Divide "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal..., (The Library of Congress, n.d.)" a popular statement from the Declaration of Independence, but are all American really equal? One would think that per the declaration that all men would have fair access to resources America would have to offer, but is that the case? American minorities would assert that they are not view as equals compared to any other race in regards to how they are treated and the prejudice they experience every day. European Americans would argue that everyone has the same opportunities as anyone else if you work hard for it. Two groups with two different beliefs and 2 different cultures. If one group of people have money and the other doesn’t then one has an advantage over the other. To truly understand the meaning of classism the term has to be dissected into parts. Class is defines as rank in terms of income, wealth, education, status or power. (Activistclassculture.org, n.d.). One could say based on how much money an individual makes, their educational background, and cultural background they are born in to dictates their importance in society.
