Behavior Modification Assignment The target behavior that I want to manipulate and completely change of mine is picking and biting my nails. I have realized that whenever I am nervous or in a stressful situation I seem to bite or pick at my nails. Everyone has experienced classical conditioning and may not even know it. A common example is food: you ate something that made you sick and now you never eat it; you’re conditioned against the food because you had a bad reaction. In the most simple terms, classical conditioning or Pavlovian conditioning is learning a new behavior with different stimuli that create a reaction that can be repeated numerously through a recurring experiment. This kind of conditioning is seen in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, and goes along with the theme, psychological conditioning is potentially dangerous, which I agree with.…

Fingernail biting involves raising the fingers, usually one at a time, to the face and then inserting them inside the mouth. Once inside the mouth, the teeth are positioned around the fingernail to bite it and make it shorter. This is then repeated for all ten fingers time and time again.…

Operant conditioning can be used in behaviour modification, stopping addiction, language acquisition and in many other areas through reinforcement or punishment. Punishment is used to stop bad behaviours while reinforcement stops the bad behaviour and teaches what to do instead. A good example of the application of operant conditioning is a speeding driver. If he gets a ticket on that particular day, chances are, he will not over speed in future. The ticket is the punisher that puts the behaviour of over speeding to an end.…

Operant conditioning uses reinforcers to increase the likelihood of behavior repeating itself. As explained previously, I would use positive and negative reinforcement to obtain weight loss goals for my roommate. Overtime, my roommate should begin to lose weight and be able to join the football team. I only incorporated eating into my weight loss plan, but ideally weight loss plans should have exercise and diet to obtain maximum results. Weight loss has been known to work better when following a reward based plan versus a punishment based plan.…
