For the past 7 years, I have just floated through life party to party with no goals or ambition to do anything productive. School used to be a joke to me and I didn’t really know the concept of what the word work meant. A horrible event in my life has changed my perspective on things, it has set me on a course of positive actions that lead me to start accomplishing career goals.
It was a blustery fall day, jack-o-lanterns and festive decorations where up for Halloween. I was driving home from a long night of partying and had a few to many beers to be driving. I wasn’t worried as I had made this drive many times in the past. Unfortunately, this night wasn’t like the rest, I was quickly startled by a loud crash and could hear glass shattering and metal twisting. When I realized what happened, my car was wrapped around a telephone pole I could hear the sounds of sirens off in the distance. It didn’t occur to me that they were coming to arrest me.

Even though jail was a bad experience it gave me time to put things into perspective. I now know that I needed to change a lot of things in my life to grow up and I finally come to the realization that just floating through life like it was a big party wasn’t working out to well. Now I have goals in life, I want a master’s degree in acupuncture and oriental medicine. In order to achieve this I need to complete 2 years of prerequisites which is why I am currently enrolled at WCTC as a full time student. I used to weigh 150lbs and people told me I looked underweight, this motivated me to get a gym membership and to start eating healthy, since my release I have gained 35lbs and have never felt better. Guero I rolled out of bed at 3:30am on Monday morning, wondering what the heck I got myself into. Half asleep, I turned off my alarm and proceeded to get dressed and pack my clothes and toiletries. After checking to make sure I had everything in my bag to get through the week, I placed it in the trunk of my ‘95 Buick Regal, grabbed a water bottle and granola bar and headed out. It was the summer after my senior year of high school and I had agreed to help a family friend roof houses until school started.…

My mother, along with her entire family, was born in Honduras and moved to the United States when she was a teen.…

Moving forward, I joined Dr. James Cheverud's lab in the Department of Biology at Loyola University Chicago. I conducted research on diabetes and obesity to address an overwhelming public health concern. My research investigation has taught me how to make hypotheses, design experiments, gather evidence, and read scientific literature - thinking methodically just as a scientist does. These skills will prove useful in modern medicine, as science and medicine are in an everlasting state of flux. Witnessing the shortcomings of medicine in the absence of advanced medical technology in Korangi Town and Nicaragua exemplified the necessity of saying up to date with biomedical revelations.…

n this wrinkled, stiff, battered leather bag lied my tattered brown diary, my life. Upon it’s torn, coarse, and brown-stained paper lied my life story. As of recently, I haven’t been able to write in the past few days due to the nervousness I felt and haze of suspense drooping and oozing from the air almost as if it were smoke. “What’s going on? Are we going to be okay?…

8~ A week had passed, and it had rained the night before, and so, the earth gave up her heady scents, the next day, in the deep wood, where two bespectacled, little girls walked and explored. As the breezes made the boughs of the pine forests sing softly, one of the girls spoke up. "You shouldn't have walked out here without the counselors knowing where you were," Velma cautioned.…

It was one in the morning, maybe later than that, I was tucked into bed with a book that I have re-read a few times. The rain was hitting my window with occasional lighting which was soon followed by thunder. I felt like I have been reading the same sentence for the sixth time, but the words weren't making sense. I finally gave up and tossed the book aside, which made a loud thud sound as it hit the ground. I picked up my phone that was laying under my pillow and opened Twitter to see what was trending.…
